Welcome Spring!

We are back to that beautiful time of year where we get to put away our big and thick winter parkas and bring out our shorts and sandals! Snow begins to melt and we can see the beautiful potential for our gardens. Spring is definitely a time to celebrate.

Remember the pictures you saved on your phone or the magazine clippings you put aside during the winter time? It is time to make those ideas real life.

Some plants do grow better in the Spring than in the Summer or vice versa. Make sure that you do a little research to see if your dream garden is better for Spring or for Summer. Once you have all the information you need... it’s shopping time! Who doesn’t love shopping! Visit your local gardening centre and pick out your seeds, tools, soil, fertilizer and you can’t forget a snazzy looking gardening outfit. You’re ready to begin!

Those plants you started growing indoors? Time to let them enjoy the warm weather! Now, before you start transplanting your indoor plants... remember avoid doing it before the soil is ready, which can result in shock to your plants. You can either do a little research and see what the appropriate temperatures and if it will be compatible to your outdoor soil. Or for another option, you can even just place your entire pot outside and see how it reacts to the environment.

If you do not already have a bed for your plants, let’s get one started! You have to make sure that the soil isn’t too moist because this will result in clumps. You’ll need to mix your soil with the fertilizer that you’ve either made yourself or bought from the store.

When you dig the hole, make sure the hole is big enough. A good way to tell is if the hole is big enough to hold the plant and the pot. To remove the plant from the pot you will want to wiggle it lightly until it loosens and comes out. You do not want to yank it out which can break the root system. If the roots have grown into the shape of the pot, you will want to loosen it so that it can grow properly in the ground with your fingers very gently. Once the roots are out, you are ready to plant it into the hole that you’ve made.

For the next little while you will have to pay extra care and attention to your plant to make sure it is adjusting to the outdoor environment just fine. Water your plant thoroughly to help the plant recover from the transplant.

You are now ready to make your dream garden come to life. It takes time, patience and a lot of love, but it will be worth it in the end! Happy planting!
