Hiring Manager Series
Debbie Kriess , our director of client services, will be covering hot topics that hiring managers may face in this economy.
We are helpers, problem solvers, and business partners.?Debbie's WHY has been dedicating her career to client service is impacting people’s lives in a favorable way.?Assisting organizations and professionals achieve goals while following a disciplined hiring life cycle process and adding value while doing so is extremely rewarding.?This includes staying abreast of industry trends and dynamics that impact the process and outcome, having open and honest communications about evolving market conditions and candidate expectations, and guiding organizations and candidates through timely feedback and decisions making.?
For sake of simplification, the natural progression of our client service life cycle/partnership with hiring managers is outlined below in six steps.?
1)????Assess
Assessing and defining requirements – this is an important and in-depth conversation to kick off the search, understanding how the role fits into your organization, why the role is available, both the challenges and opportunities that the incumbent may expect, budgetary considerations, and reviewing and revising standard corporate job descriptions and skill requirements to understand and discuss the flexibility and must-have criteria.
2)????Source
Leveraging a multi-faceted and team approach - utilizing several channels and diverse tools to filling the talent pipeline and moving prospective candidates through the stages of our disciplined “no fit no fill” process that I learned early in my career for each and every client request and staffing need.
3)????Recruit
Understanding you, our client, and your organization’s value proposition/employer branding in the marketplace to valuable to us in attracting and recruiting active and passive job seekers to your specific opportunity through a mix of recruiting strategies, including cold calling, tapping into referrals, and leveraging our extensive database, etc.
4)????Interview
Conducting detailed interviews with each applicant recruited to the position pipeline is critical in assessing education, skills, experiences and core competencies, and aligning candidate motivators and career positioning offered by our client’s opportunity.
5)????Selection
Selecting a candidate or group of candidates to recommend and present for review and consideration, coordinating interviews and following our clients’ hiring process, and incorporating any assessments or tools consistently used by the organizations we serve.
6)????Offer / Hire
We are a critical partner with our clients in the process of extending fair and competitive offers and negotiating for the starts and hiring of full-time, temporary, and temp-to-hire talent.
With record low unemployment rates, changing workforce demographics, and evolving candidate wants, needs, and expectations the life cycle process can be disrupted and require a reset or restart breaking the flow of the natural and intended cycle.
Stay tuned for the continuation of our Client Service Series, including hot topics on common breakdowns in the hiring life cycle process, creating a positive and rewarding candidate experience, effectively onboarding new hires, and other recommended best practices.?

Is the last one in?REALLY?the first one out? Well, in short, no. Seeing a company hiring during layoffs is understandably daunting. The United States has seen a wavering market for a while now. While the looming layoffs may feel like we are in a nosedive, there is likely a peak coming soon. However, it is important to remember that if a company is still hiring while laying off, the role they are hiring for is critical. Below are a few questions to consider if you’re looking to join a new company during layoffs.
What caused a reduction in the workforce?
Asking the interviewer why they had to resort to layoffs will allow you to understand what sector of the company will primarily be affected. For example, if they are laying off talent acquisition you may see less hiring in the coming year.
What percentage of staff was laid off?
This will show you how much trouble the company may be having without directly asking. If they were in a position to lay off hundreds of people simultaneously, the company may not be doing well so they are reaching for anything to help. If 65% of the company was laid off in one fell swoop, it may be cause for concern.
How were those who survived the layoffs selected?
Not many employees are able to survive layoffs. Asking how many were able to survive and why will show you how the company thinks of its people. They may have kept the top performers, most seniority, or even the new grads that are eager to learn.
?There is an old Wall Street adage, “Bulls and bears make money, but pigs get slaughtered.” This aphorism means that you need to know when a party is ending. Within the job-search context, you don’t want to make a nominal move for an increased salary. You could end up losing your new job shortly after starting, as the confluence of a declining stock market, an erosion of the wealth effect, rampant inflation, and supply chain disruptions spook companies into cutting costs, which includes firings and furloughs. This leads to a recruiting adage -?when things go bad, you don’t want to be the “last one hired and first one fired.”?There is no guarantee that a job will be secure whether you apply during a mass hiring period or during a layoff period. The best thing that you can do is remain prepared and do the best work that you can. When interviewing for roles, you are interviewing the company as well, so never feel nervous to ask the hard-hitting questions that you may be worried about.
