GLUTATHIONE
It doesn’t exactly slip off the tongue, but glutathione is impressive when it comes to skin health. From fighting free radicals, boosting radiance to stopping fine lines in their tracks, it is gaining popularity. This naturally occurring antioxidant found in plants and animals is made up of three amino acids: glycine, glutamate and cysteine. It is made by our bodies, but like all good things things, declines as we age.
HYALUGUARD
HyaluGuard (INCI: Butylene Glycol, Water, Artemisia Capillaries Extract) protects hyaluronic acid from degradation in dermal cells and maintains its structure. It has been found to reduce sagging of cheeks and various wrinkles in the face, as well as increase the moisture of skin.
MUSHROOMS
As well as helping to cut carbon emissions, mushrooms are rich in antioxidants, which can help protect the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as we age. Some types such as shiitake have been shown to help brighten and even out skin tone, reducing the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation.
Many mushrooms have anti-inflammatory properties that can help to sooth and calm irritated skin, so great for eczema and psoriasis. For acne prone skin, some mushrooms have antibacterial properties which can help reduce acne-causing bacteria, helping to prevent those pesky breakouts.
COFFEE
The coffee plant is rich in antioxidants and as such, scientists and beauty brands have discovered certain benefits when it’s applied topically to the face and body, ranging from protecting against environmental damage to reducing puffy under-eye bags. SCIENCE OF SKIN
In 2023 skincare goals will shift towards maintaining skin health with ingredients such as peptides, ceramides and lipids. Good skin health is all about a robust skin barrier.
Skin barrier health is trending, with a casual 129.5 million views on the search term “skin barrier repair” on TikTok, and searches for “how to repair the skin barrier” up 130 per cent on Google Trends in the past 30 days (as end of March 2023).

PRICKLY PEAR
Prickly pear is derived from a cactus plant, also called nopal or opuntia. They're native to the Americas and are used as food as well as an ingredient in cosmetic products. Prickly pear seed oil is rich in essential fatty acids, omega-6 and -9, as well as vitamin E, a potent antioxidant.
When the skin is left unprotected against free radicals, oxidative stress occurs, which can cause chronic inflammation and breakdown of skin cellular functions like the production of collagen. The oil offers antioxidant protection from free radicals and has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties.
MYROTHAMNUS FLABELLIFOLIA
Described as the ‘resurrection plant’, Myrothamnus flabellifolia is being used by?Armani Beauty as the main ingredient in its Crema Nera skincare range. Able to withstand extreme weather conditions, from drought to torrential rain, the plant is being used for its phytochemicals, which serve as powerful antioxidants in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
MICRO-ALGAE
Active ingredients company?Seppic?is trying to normalise the use of ‘extremophilic organisms’ – a term that describes organisms that can survive in hostile environments – in its marketing and communications. Its Bioplasma BG extract contains a type of micro-algae native to the Sahel, a desert formerly covered by an ocean that receded 15m years ago. The micro-algae have the ability to resist strong radiation because of a unique mechanism that enables them to become dormant when the environment becomes dangerous for their survival, before reviving again when the conditions are appropriate.
