Evolving Mentorship: Revisiting Influential Models and the Future of Targeted Youth Support

In this new article, researchers reflect on conversations with three influential theoretical models of youth mentoring developed about 20 years ago by Drs. Tom Keller, Renee Spencer, and Jean Rhodes. The authors highlight the ongoing importance of these models in shaping mentoring research and practice, while also noting areas for potential updates and future directions.

The article emphasizes MentorPRO’s co-founder - Dr. Jean Rhodes' - work and her mechanisms of mentoring model, which has been highly influential in the field. As followers of MentorPRO’s approach will know, Rhodes argues for a more targeted approach to mentoring, viewing mentors as paraprofessionals who can address specific issues that led to a young person’s referral for mentoring. She stresses the importance of training and supervising mentors to effectively support youth mental health and other outcomes.

Importantly, the article underscores that while a strong mentor-mentee relationship remains crucial, it is not sufficient on its own. Effective mentoring requires this relationship foundation combined with targeted interventions, proper training, and ongoing support for mentors. This approach can help bridge gaps in mental health services, particularly for marginalized youth, and potentially lead to stronger outcomes than less structured mentoring approaches... University of Massachusetts Boston Gears Up For Year 2 of MentorPRO

In 2023, MentorPRO was introduced to mentoring programs at the University of Massachusetts Boston, providing a platform for students to connect with their peer mentors, receive guidance, and find the resources they need to succeed in their first year at UMass Boston. Now, UMass Boston is gearing up for the 2024-2025 academic year, expanding partnerships by serving new cohorts of students in various mentoring programs.?

The MentorPRO partnership started with the UMass Boston CLA First! Learning Community, an innovative program designed to foster academic success and personal growth for first-year students in the College of Liberal Arts. By creating a small, supportive community within the larger university, CLA First! aims to help students build strong academic foundations, achieve personal and professional goals, and engage with the campus community. Throughout the academic year, the partnership continued to expand. While initially designed for only first-year students, students who graduated from CLA First!, are preparing for the SophoMORE program, where they will continue to connect with a mentor through MentorPRO into their Sophomore year.

Based solely on word of mouth, MentorPRO has also expanded to additional programs at UMass Boston, including the entire incoming class of UMass Boston’s College of Management and their three learning communities.?
