Upcoming Event: ESG Africa Community of Practice Networking Forum
Mark your calendars! Our next Community of Practice online networking session will be hosted on 30th July 2024 on Zoom from 16:00 to 18:00 SAST. Event Recap: CBAM Webinar Highlights
On 10th July 2024, we hosted the CBAM Webinar, which addressed the EU's implementation of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and its impact on African businesses. The webinar explored potential risk mitigation measures and featured insightful conversations and questions from attendees.
?Key discussions included:?
·???????? The challenge of CBAM at the WTO and the role of the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC) in securing support.
·???????? The disproportionate impact of CBAM on African countries given their lower carbon emissions and historical contributions.
·???????? The potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to enhance African resilience against the negative effects of CBAM.
·???????? Strategies for aligning sustainable practices with social well-being and balancing conflicting issues, such as building nuclear power stations versus promoting greener energy.
·???????? The role of the financial sector and policy setters in incentivising domestic change and innovation.?
Additional summarised questions raised during the webinar included:?
·???????? What measures will DTIC take to secure support from other countries to challenge CBAM at the WTO?
·???????? How can AfCFTA contribute to African resilience against CBAM's negative effects?
·???????? What steps are being taken to manage the risk of EUDR to African trade and control trade dependence on EU markets and Asia?
