So much has happened in the last 4 weeks!? In this edition, we're excited to showcase the power of collaboration, an example of how Digital Public Goods working together can strengthen Digital Public Infrastructure and also to give you insights into the DHIS2 integration webinar the OpenFn team hosted this month!

Collaboration is key amongst the DPG community.

Digital Public Goods (DPGs) play a pivotal role as the backbone for strengthening Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). At their core, DPGs are open-source software, open data, open AI models, and open standards that are freely available for use and adaptation. These resources are essential for developing robust, scalable, and interoperable digital systems that can be deployed across various sectors, including health, education, and social protection. By providing foundational tools and frameworks, DPGs empower governments, organizations, and communities to build and enhance their digital infrastructure in ways that are cost-effective, sustainable, and inclusive.

In a rapidly evolving digital landscape, close collaboration and partnerships between DPGs have become essential. By working together to ensure not only interoperability but also the elimination of redundant effort, stewards of DPGs can pool resources, share knowledge and enhance efficiency, driving us closer to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

OpenSPP and OpenFn Collaboration

OpenSPP is an open-source digital platform designed to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of social protection and agricultural development programs in low- and middle-income countries. As a Digital Public Good serving over 20 million beneficiaries, OpenSPP offers a modular, highly interoperable platform with a comprehensive management information system and dynamic registries. It can be easily adapted to meet the specific needs, goals, and existing systems of any country.

The partnership between OpenSPP and OpenFn is a great example of the strength of collaboration in the Digital Public Goods space. By adding an OpenSPP adaptor into OpenFn's leading workflow automation and data-exchange platform, OpenSPP has unlocked countless data integration and automation possibilities for its user base, as OpenFn can connect OpenSPP with any other application.?

OpenSPP Use Case

Imagine a real-world scenario where field officers equipped with tablets or smartphones use KoboToolBox to collect vital information from residents for a social protection program. They’ll gather data on income, family details, and living conditions. Using the Cron trigger type, OpenFn fetches every form submission at set intervals from the Kobotoolbox server for cleaning, validation and mapping. The mapped data is then fed into OpenSPP, which utilizes this information to identify eligible beneficiaries and distribute the appropriate entitlements. This streamlined process could ensure that the right support reaches those in need efficiently and accurately, leveraging the power of automation and data integration to enhance social protection efforts. This could not only improve the accuracy and timeliness of benefit delivery but also enhance the overall accountability and transparency of the program.

Quickstart Technical Training session on building DHIS2 Workflows with OpenFn!

We recently led a technical training webinar focused on "Integrating an External Application with DHIS2." During the live session, which had over 40 participants actively engaged, we built a running data integration between an external REST API and DHIS2! We started with demonstrating how to fetch data from the API, clean and transform it, and then map and load the data into DHIS2 as tracked entity instances. The process was built step by step by the OpenFn Product team, showcasing the simplicity and power of OpenFn’s platform in real-time.

Once the integration was built, we tested it live during the webinar to verify that data flowed seamlessly between the two systems. This hands-on demonstration allowed participants to see firsthand how quickly and efficiently such integrations can be set up. We also used the time to chat with all the attendees in a Q&A session which helped further solidify their understanding of the integration capabilities and potential in their own project environments.

Hosting these types of sessions is not only wonderful for the team, but also crucial because OpenFn’s ability to integrate any application in about 40 minutes is incredibly powerful and has the potential to revolutionize the sector. The speed and efficiency with which these integrations can be built mean that organizations can rapidly build and deploy solutions that ensure critical health data is accurately captured, shared, and used across systems, driving better outcomes and greater impact.
