AWS, Google, Meta, and Microsoft are building or upgrading massive data centers in New Albany, Ohio.

To sign off on documents as an engineer or electrical engineer in Ohio, you must be a U.S. Professional Engineer (P.E.) in Ohio.

Just to reemphasize, the U.S. is a federal nation. Each state has its own requirements for P.E. licensing, which may differ. There is no such thing as a P.E. for the entire U.S.; you are a P.E. in a specific state. Additionally, you can apply to be a P.E. in additional states.

What are the requirements to become a P.E. engineer in Ohio?

Requirement 1: Education

  • You must graduate from a 4-year accredited engineering curriculum OR
  • You must graduate from a master’s degree program OR
  • You must graduate from a 4-year engineering technology curriculum OR
  • You must graduate from a four-year engineering curriculum outside the U.S., and NCEES evaluated your education and deemed it to meet its standards.

Requirement 2: Examination

You must have passed the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering (F.E) and the NCEES Principles and Practice of Engineering (P.E.) examinations.

Requirement 3: Experience

  • If you graduated with a minimum of four years of engineering education, you must have at least four years of qualifying experience.
  • If you graduated from a minimum of 4 years of engineering technology curriculum, you must have at least 8 years of qualifying experience.

If you meet all those requirements (1, 2, and 3), you can apply and will receive a P.E. license from the Ohio Board of Engineers.

Fun facts to know:

  • Ohio will not waive any of the requirements above. Both exams are required, with no exceptions.
  • Experience must be acquired under a P.E.-licensed supervisor. The Ohio Board will make an exception and accept experience under a non-P.E.-licensed supervisor if the applicant works in specific industries as defined by Ohio rules.
  • A teacher or former teacher may use engineering research as 4 years of experience.

Why can’t the requirements for PE be standardized globally wherever PE is applicable? Just as NCEES is the sole authority for examinations, a similar authority could be established to register all PEs. What is the issue in it?
