M/Y Kalizma: a historical treasure
Originally launched in 1906 as Minona, M/Y Kalizma is an Edwardian-style vintage yacht. It was one of the first yachts to feature an electric lighting system. During World War I, Kalizma served the British Navy in maritime patrols and later became a prominent competitor in regattas in the UK and USA. In 1967, Richard Burton gifted the yacht to Elizabeth Taylor to celebrate her second Oscar win. Renamed in honor of Burton's daughters, the yacht is also famous for its connection to the Cartier diamond symbolizing the Taylor-Burton romance. After changing hands several times, the current owner commissioned a restoration project to return Kalizma to its former glory. This restoration was overseen by Palazzo Morelli, led by Alessandro Ortenzi, at the Colombo shipyard in Sri Lanka, utilizing both local and international craftsmen.
Elegance and refinement
The restoration focused on the master cabin, master bathroom, interior lounge, and exterior main deck. The interiors, enriched with a color palette inspired by Elizabeth Taylor's "violet eyes," feature tones of gray, blue, and burgundy, harmonizing with the existing mahogany furnishings. Traditional white was reinterpreted in champagne tones, providing a delicate tactile experience with innovative technical fabrics. Frames, profiles, and satin brass details, alongside a refined lighting system, enhance the glamorous atmosphere.
Notable brands used in the restoration include Cantori, Borzalino, Delightfull, Alcantara, Jab, Palagi, Eichholtz, Frato, Bath&Bath, Seora, and Fimet.
Tribute to Burton-Taylor
Common areas have been redesigned to create intimate lounges, adorned with graphic compositions and paintings of Burton and Taylor aboard Kalizma. Brass details complement the original mahogany paneling, which has been fully preserved and restored. The Edwardian-style lounge bar now features Kalizma’s new emblem, created by Palazzo Morelli, and reproduced on all custom-made textiles and table accessories. The master cabin, entirely renovated, features a luminous palette dominated by warm champagne white, with brass details and a honey onyx frame illuminated from behind. The master bathroom, in chromatic harmony with the cabin, uses onyx and brass details, complemented by warm and enveloping lighting.
Main deck for relaxation
The main deck has been redefined to host convivial moments while ensuring relaxation and privacy. The materials, with a classic look but technological finishes, meet the specific needs of modern yachting. M/Y Kalizma continues to be a symbol of elegance and history, offering a unique experience aboard a legendary yacht. Thanks to meticulous restoration and attention to detail, Kalizma shines brighter than ever.
