Welcome to motan!

It's been a few months since I joined motan Inc as their Marketing Communications Lead, and I thought it would be insightful to share my experience.

To help give some background, I last interviewed back in 2021 after the startup that I joined lost a round of funding and shut down. I had never been in that spot (jobless), and frankly, it was a bit of a puzzle at first. I took my time and am thankful for colleagues and connections that hurried to help! I had offers within the first month, but for several organizations it was the process that revealed components of the organization's culture that was not a fit for me. For anyone looking for their next role, take your time -- don't rush to a decision. Be the right fit for the organization, and they for you!?Fast forward to September 2024...

How was the interview process?

For the motan role I connected to their recruiting partner, DISHER Talent Solutions , as I had previously worked "next door" to their offices in Zeeland. I knew about their culture and felt a level of reassurance that they partnered with like-minded organizations. The first step in the interview process went seamlessly, as did the rest. After moving through the recruiter interview, I was promptly invited for 2 on-site sessions with leadership and team members. I could immediately see the culture and energy was a fit for my next work home, and knew they felt the same about me as an offer came in the following week.

How would you describe their culture and atmosphere?

Initially I wasn't sure what to expect from a manufacturing-based organization. You may have a stigma in your head about a 1980's environment where teams of engineers speak at a highly technical level and above your head, you don't step out on the shop floor or safety alarms go off, and you sit in solitary confinement (aka your cubicle) doing the things you are directed to do each day.

Well, I can definitively say that it's directly opposite of that. The team is full of talented, experienced people that are willing to help with whatever is needed. I often overhear people offering to pitch-in on tasks, give advice to help overcome an obstacle, ask questions without recourse or redirection, and getting the right people involved to keep moving things forward.

What was the onboarding experience like?

All of the typical HR and benefit related information was very standard and well organized. For job-related onboarding it felt more like a start-up onboarding process than what you may experience in a larger organization. motan inc. had been without a formalized marketing program for a few years, and therefore there was not a lot of knowledge transfer to conduct. I spent the first several weeks analyzing the performance of channels and agency partners, and getting to know the people, processes and products. I've also been absorbing as much product knowledge as possible, as this is a new industry and product line for me. motan has several tools for product information that have been a great resource to get me started. Their SUPPORTnet tool for employees is well thought out and provides all the necessary resources in a single, organized site. I'm also grateful for the many people that have offered to help get me up-to-speed on the product knowledge, as well as conduct customer installation tours to get me familiarized with entire systems. Overall, I can say for a more informal onboarding that motan has provided the support and information I needed in the first few months as well as given me the space to explore, analyze and start developing a robust marketing program.?

What?does it take to be a part of motan?

First and foremost, you need to be customer-centric. The dedication to providing our customers the products and service that they need to succeed in their business is top-of-mind at motan. You should also be self-motivated. If you need a manager to provide constant oversight to your work, then this is not a place where you would thrive. motan hires great people, and is there to provide support while their people do great work. You should also have the aptitude to ask the hard questions and not sit on the sidelines. We all can make a difference, and sometimes that requires asking the "why" or "why not". Lastly, be a creative thinker. Try new things. Don't let failure stop you. Never stop learning.
