Welcome to the Monday edition.

Welcome to the Monday edition.

It's edition #18, and I am trialling something different: posting the newsletter every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

I stumble upon so much stuff that inspires me that I want to share but it can often be hard to cull it down into just one newsletter once a week.

So, I hope you enjoy the increased frequency and the stories within.

And, as always, all the links for the stories can be found at the end of the newsletter.

Rodd

P.S. Yes, this will appear as a Sunday edition in some timezones, this planet is just so damn big.

ADVERTISING / CONTENT

Hoka's new social-first campaign hits the ground running.

Ogilvy UK has produced a new series of social-first content for footwear brand Hoka.

I'm a big fan of this kind of content, I have been making it for almost 10 years now, and everyone loves a story, especially when told by someone who is living the story.

You can see one of the spots and read more about the campaign in the links at the end of the newsletter.

DESIGN / BRANDING

A long-time resident of Brooklyn has a brand new look.

My last apartment in New York was in Brooklyn and only a 10-minute subway right from the Brooklyn Museum, a great place to go for some inspiration.

Now, the museum, which has been around since 1824, has a new and vibrant look.

The museum engaged the Brooklyn-based design studio Other Means to design the new identity and bring the institution into the future on its 200th anniversary.

You can read more about the project and see the work in the links below.

ART

There is life after advertising - in art and photography.

Former W+K London ECD tony davidson has an art photography show in London.

It's called "Throwaway" and features thousands of images taken through the apertures of street bins.

The show is on until October 25.

SONIC BRANDING

Brands need more than static elements today.

There's no denying we live in a video world, our daily lives involve encountering videos almost everywhere we turn.

And what's an important part of a video? Sound.

So it makes sense that more brands are adopting sonic branding elements.

Plus, sonic branding doesn't need a video to give it value in the brand space, it can pop up in other places and spaces and immediately connect the person who heard it to the brand it's associated with.

McDonald's "I'm lovin' it" is a prime example, as is Netflix's 'Tudum'.

As a musician and a trained audio engineer, this subject is something close to my heart.

You can read a great piece on sonic branding in the links below.

MUSIC

What was the first punk album?

This is a contentious issue with many and one that is often debated.

And as a big fan of punk rock, it is something close to my heart.

Some will say The Ramones, and others will say Patti Smith.

Below is an article about the topic.

One band that unfortunately gets overlooked in the article is The Saints from Australia, they formed in 1973 but sadly released their first album too late to be considered the first.

But many punk purists give The Saints credit for being one of the first, if not "the first", punk bands. The Ramones didn't start until 1974.

PHOTOGRAPHY / BOOK

A photo essay from New York's Lower East Side

Great photos tell stories. American documentary photographer Angela Cappetta has done just that with her new book that was released this week, Glendalis: The Life and World of a Youngest Daughter.

A chance encounter with a Puerto Rican family led to a decade-long photography journey.

You can read more in the links below.

SIDE PROJECTS

Staying creatively inspired requires you to step away from the regular work.

I tell everyone that I coach that it's important to have side projects, it keeps you not only inspired but also motivated.

Plus they are, or should be, fun.

On a trip back to Sydney a few months back I unearthed a box of old cameras, film and digital, and rolls of film in my storage unit, I grabbed a few of them, plus the old rolls of film, to bring back to Bangkok.

I am going to do some photography projects, both film and digital, using two of the cameras, a Nikon film point-and-shoot and a Canon digital point-and-shoot, both of which I'm guessing would be worth about $100 or less on eBay.

My main focus, no pun intended, will mostly be street photography. I am a big fan of Japanese street photographer Daido Moriyama, he is renowned for using cheap and basic point-and-shoot cameras and his work in beautiful and raw all at the same time.

Sure, I also own better cameras, like my Canon with its 50mpx power, but I like the idea of taking away a lot of the extras and getting back to basics.

If you have a side project or plans for one I'd love to hear about it in the comments.

Part of my storage unit haul.

FUN

If we can't laugh at ourselves and our industry then there's no hope.

If you don't follow Paul Taylor's ADWEAK posts then I seriously suggest you do.

A daily dose of "ouch, that's so close to the bone" posts that will either make you laugh, sigh, or maybe even cry - but still in a funny way.

Add him to your LinkedIn feed for some light relief.

CREATIVE DIRECTION 101

One of the most important jobs of a Creative Director is to give direction.

That's why it is in the title.

If you work for a CD that ever says the below, or a similar iteration, you're working under the wrong person.

Good CDs show you the pathways you cannot yet see, they help steer you in the right 'direction' by, you guessed it...giving 'direction'.

WHY I LOVE THIS AD

I am a big fan of a simple visual.

Even better if it exaggerates the product benefits for entertainment value.

If you can make someone smile or say, "That's clever", then you've done a good job.

Much better than boring or annoying someone with some uncreative wallpaper.

When I left the music business and got into the advertising industry, one of my first ECDs once said to me, "Rodd, you're still in the entertainment business, make sure as many ideas as possible entertain the audience." That stuck with me.

$99 SLICE OF COACHING

Is there anything better than a slice of 99 cent New York pizza?

How about a slice of Creative Coaching? For only $99 for 60 minutes.

It's an opportunity to get some clarity on some issues, help get unstuck, get some advice, and even ask me where to get a good slice of pizza in NYC.

It's all part of my mission to help elevate the careers of 1,000 people.

Limited spots are available.

Grab one by emailing me at - [email protected]

That's a wrap.

I hope you liked it.

See you on Wednesday.

Rodd

100% agree on the sonic branding opportunity. When I hear the Netflix 'Tudum' it is: a.) a signal b.) a promise that what follows is worth my attention Brands who understand that the second part matters will have success with these kinds of elements. Brands that don't will simply be signaling that you're about to watch something crap. And I have effectively used this argument to raise the ambition of the work.
