DESIGN - Music

Behind the new album art for The Cure.

It's been 16 years since The Cure released an album, so for Songs of a Lost World the band once again turned to their long-time collaborator, Andy Vella, to create the artwork.

Creative Review recently published an interview with the designer to get the story behind the artwork.

Here is a snippet.

“The new album is The Cure at their classic best,” Andy Vella, graphic designer and the band’s long-time collaborator , tells CR. The result is ripe for visual exploration. “It’s got an amazing darkness, presenting a graphic reality that describes where we are now as a human species. Musically, it’s very powerful and transports you to a very stark place.”

CREATIVE TOOLS

Something new for creatives.

There is a new app called Cosmos that is winning over creative people with its great design and no 'likes'.

You can read all about it in an article on Creative Bloq.

Here is an excerpt.

With X sinking into a swamp of bile and Instagram alienating users due to low reach and opaque AI policies, many creatives have been searching for a new social media platform that better meets their needs.

Cosmos is being billed as a "Pinterest for creatives". Isn't Pinterest already for creatives? I hear you ask. Many designers and photographers use the platform for moodboarding and for saving inspiration. But Cosmos appears to be more specifically aimed at the creative sector, and its clean UI is winning it new users.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Treat your brain like a muscle.

Hitting the gym is great for you but if your brain starts waning then you won't have anything to run and operate your body.

If you're in the business of coming up with ideas you better keep your brain healthy.

That includes exercising and giving it the nutrients it needs.

I've seen the effects of dementia first hand and it was a stark reminder to maintain brain health.

That's one reason I do my 'Twenty Ideas a Day' ritual and I am also mindful of eating certain foods.

You can read more in an article I found on the topic, written by a brain surgeon, you'll find it in the links below.

ADVERTISING - Print

Hoop dreams.

When it comes to sports, India is well known as a cricket nation, but basketball seems to be getting some attention.

I stumbled across some ads for the NBA Basketball Schools India.

Nicely executed and photographed.

QUOTE

“Creativity doesn’t wait for that perfect moment. It fashions its own perfect moments out of ordinary ones.” – Bruce Garrabrandt

DESIGN - TRENDS

What could be ahead in design?

From AI to old-school craft and everything in between, Creative Boom asked some great designers for their thoughts about what designers and agencies could be focused on in 2025.

BRIEFS

A great brief is invaluable.

You can never underestimate the power of a great brief.

Some years ago there was a great documentary, BRIEFLY, made about the humble brief, where some industry professionals share their thoughts and insights.

If you haven't watched it before, or haven't seen it in a long time, it's well worth setting aside some time.

Here are some details.

A series of one-on-one interviews with Frank Gehry (Founder Gehry Partner), Yves Béhar (CEO fuseproject), Maira Kalman (Illustrator), John C Jay (President @ GX, Partner @ Wieden + Kennedy), David Rockwell (CEO Rockwell Group), and John Boiler (CEO 72andSunny), were asked them to elaborate on how they define – and use – the brief to deliver exceptional creative results.

The end goal of Briefly is to help inform and inspire future generations of collaborators to write better briefs and manage the briefing process differently in order to help lead to exceptional creative results.

You'll find a link to it at the end of the newsletter.
