Welcome to MAYhem! The Receding Tide of Telehealth in the Crashing Waves of Medicaid Redetermination

Welcome to MAYhem! The Receding Tide of Telehealth in the Crashing Waves of Medicaid Redetermination

April marked Medicaid Awareness month and we were breaking barriers on stages, convening in DC for policy issues, monitoring capital market trends? with uncertainty in the start-up market?first quarter and watching as the tidal waters of Medicaid redetermination?kept swelling.? ?As the healthcare conference season gains momentum in May, the challenges faced by the most vulnerable populations, particularly in the context of Medicaid redetermination, demand our urgent attention. Amid this flurry of activity, recent decisions by major players like Walmart and UnitedHealth Group to scale back their telehealth and retail healthcare services underscore the shifting landscape of healthcare accessibility and the critical need for sustained, meaningful dialogue and partnerships.

The Unintended Consequences of Medicaid Redetermination

As we navigate through the post-pandemic era, the Medicaid redetermination process presents significant challenges and opportunities. With over 20?million disenrollments already, the complexity of this nationwide initiative is clear. For the millions of Americans affected, particularly the vulnerable and underserved communities, the need for a streamlined, understanding, and inclusive approach is urgent. This is where HealthTech for Medicaid (HT4M) and its partners can play a pivotal role in transforming challenges into opportunities for improved healthcare access.

The Challenge at Hand

Medicaid redetermination has plunged many into uncertainty, largely due to procedural complexities and lack of clear communication. Members often find themselves disenrolled without a clear understanding of why, struggling with renewal notices, and grappling with language barriers. State systems overwhelmed by the sheer volume of redeterminations contribute further to the chaos, leading to long wait times and unmet needs for assistance. Many who find themselves without coverage are unable to access essential medications and healthcare services, pushing them towards emergency services instead of preventive care. The bureaucratic maze, characterized by long wait times and lack of assistance, further alienates those in dire need. This situation not only exacerbates the health vulnerabilities but also strains the healthcare system at large.

The Call to Action: Beyond Thought Leadership to Tangible Partnerships

As industry leaders, policymakers, healthcare providers, and advocates gather during this pivotal conference season, there is a golden opportunity to transform our approach to healthcare accessibility, especially for the most vulnerable. The retreat from expansive healthcare ventures like those attempted by Walmart and UnitedHealth should not signify an end but rather a pivot towards more sustainable, inclusive healthcare models. ? Here’s how we can move the needle:

  • Enhanced Collaboration Across Sectors: We need to foster stronger partnerships between healthcare providers, non-profits, government agencies, and the tech sector to create integrated solutions that address the barriers faced by the unsheltered and other vulnerable groups. This includes simplifying the redetermination process and ensuring that state systems are equipped to handle unique challenges.? Health Tech for Medicaid is here to partner and assist.
  • Innovative Use of Technology: While major corporations reassess their telehealth strategies, there's room to harness technology to aid Medicaid redetermination processes. This could involve developing intuitive online systems that help users complete applications and understand eligibility requirements without bureaucratic hurdles.? If you have a tech solution we need to be aware of, send?us a note.
  • Focused Dialogue on Procedural Disenrollment: Conferences and summits should dedicate sessions to discussing procedural disenrollment, sharing best practices, and exploring legislative adjustments needed to protect against unwarranted loss of coverage.? I personally made it a point that any stage I was on from January 2023 until the “unwinding” proposed to end in June of this year, I would create a dialogue about redetermination.? How can we better focus the dialogue? Send us any thoughts or ideas here.
  • Empowering Local Communities: Local health organizations and community leaders are often on the front lines of this battle. Supporting grassroots initiatives with funding and resources to provide direct assistance to those navigating the redetermination process can make a substantial difference.
  • Policy Advocacy: We must advocate for policies that reduce the rate of procedural disenrollments and ensure that redetermination processes do not disproportionately impact those who are already at a disadvantage.? Recently in a policy meeting in DC focused on older adults, we pushed our multidisciplinary audience to think about the perspectives of the caregiver and person trying to navigate these complicated systems.? How could we do more together??

A United Front in Healthcare

The stories of individuals who we have heard from over the past year and the systemic challenges highlighted by recent industry shifts call for a unified approach to healthcare that prioritizes accessibility and equity. This conference season, let’s commit to more than just thought leadership—let’s engage in genuine dialogue and forge partnerships that not only discuss but directly address and solve the pressing issues facing our healthcare system. ? Your voice and action can drive change. Join us in this critical conversation and be a part of the solution. Together, we can ensure that no one is left behind in our journey towards a healthier, more equitable society.? Come join us at the many conferences we will be con-sponsoring and supporting in May!

With warmest regards,

Adimika Arthur
