Welcome Lutron Electronics!

At our just concluded 59th member meeting in Seoul I was pleased to welcome to the Zigbee Alliance our newest Promoter member company, Lutron Electronics. Lutron is one of the world’s leading lighting control and automation companies.

Lutron’s history is a great one to inspire future innovation in controls and the Internet of Things. Started in the late 1950s with the vision of physicist Joel Spira and his introduction of a solid-state rotary dimmer, Spira followed quickly by incorporating Lutron in 1961 with his wife Ruth. A private company since its beginning, Lutron’s past success lays the foundation for the future of open controls, critical to the future of the IoT. Spira’s rotary dimmer brought energy savings, convenience and a new aesthetic to lighting. It changed the way people experienced light; a good reference for us as we look at changing the way people use connected devices, in lighting and other applications. And all the more relevant and important as we define the next generation of smart home experiences.

Our members have been growing the market for IoT devices, systems and consumer experiences on the foundation of open, proven interoperability standards. Lutron’s decision to join the Alliance as a Promoter adds more weight to an expansive group of high-caliber companies and thought leaders.

Lutron named industry veteran Pekka Hakkarainen, a physicist turned industry technology policy leader, to the Alliance Board of Directors. I’m especially pleased to be working closely with Dr. Hakkarainen, who’s background will be pivotal as the Alliance grows into larger ecosystems and market segments, from high performance buildings to lighting control systems, and begins intersecting with IoT global policy initiatives. Together, we have a lot to offer and we’re so proud to welcome this important leader to the Zigbee Alliance family.

Welcome Lutron and Dr. Hakkarainen!
