Text-to-video AI technology continues to develop apace. Following Google’s announcement of its impressive Lumiere tool, Open AI has now teased its own generative video model named Sora capable of generating a detailed one minute video clip from a short text description. Sample videos of Sora appear extremely impressive and video realistic, and although there is no launch date yet Open AI CEO Sam Altman has been taking user requests via X (Twitter) which demonstrate incredible variety. As Steven Levy reports in Wired; “Sora does not merely churn out videos that fulfil the demands of the prompts, but does so in a way that shows an emergent grasp of cinematic grammar”.
Sora is currently being tested both for security risks and with filmmakers and visual artists to improve its quality. Tim Brooks, a scientist at OpenAI, told MIT Technology Review: “There’s definitely some work to be done in terms of long-term coherence. For example, if someone goes out of view for a long time, they won’t come back. The model kind of forgets”. But even at this stage, Sora’s announcement was sufficiently impressive for YouTuber Mr Beast to joke with Altman that it could make him homeless.
In a further major announcement this week, Open AI also revealed that ChatGPT will now have advanced memory, allowing the tool to remember and forget the conversations it has with users.

Google is retiring the name of its AI chatbot Bard and will now be known as Gemini. The announcement came alongside the launch of a new mobile app and an enhanced AI tool, Gemini Advanced. The Gemini app has made its debut on Android, marking its first appearance on the platform, while the chatbot will also be integrated into the official Google app on Apple's iOS.
This update represents a significant enhancement to Google's AI offerings. Alongside the mobile app upgrades, Google will introduce a new subscription-based service named Gemini Advanced. Powered by Google's advanced Ultra 1.0 AI model, Gemini Advanced is designed to tackle more intricate tasks, such as coding and "logical reasoning,". Google’s Duet AI, used for generative AI in spreadsheets and documents will also be folded into Gemini.

Two recent breakthroughs using AI to predict how effective medical procedures will be
A team at Amsterdam University Medical Center (UMC) and Radboud UMC has developed an algorithm that uses MRI and supporting data to determine how effective various antidepressants will be within around one week. The efficacy of anti-depressants typically takes six-to-eight weeks to be established and around 60% of people don’t find suitable medication on their first attempt.
In addition, researchers at Kings College London have developed an AI deep learning model that can predict survival rates of adults diagnosed with brain cancer following radiotherapy. The model could be used to make better choices and apply alternative treatments much sooner following diagnosis.
