?? On this day in history – 3rd January

1496: Leonardo da Vinci unsuccessfully tests his prototype flying machine using four men to power a centralised rotor.

1977: Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak incorporate Apple Computer, Inc. They released Applesoft BASIC later that year.

Stat of the day: The estimated world population on January 1st 2024 was 8,019,876,189, a 0.95% increase on New Year's Day 2023.

Quote of the day: "Often the best way to relax is just to go back to work"

– Steve McQueen.

??? Prediction time. What do industry figures think will happen in 2024?...

  • The 'hype' stage of AI comes to an end

“I'd guess that the pendulum will swing in AI… people will be less awed by large, generative models and more level-headed about them.”

Margaret Mitchell (Chief Ethics Scientist, Hugging Face ) in Bloomberg

  • Presidential election outcome influenced by AI deepfakes

"A deepfake of President Biden saying something disqualifying could come out shortly before the election, and many people might never find out it was AI-generated. Research has consistently shown, after all, that fake news spreads further than real news."

Thor Benson (Technology writer at The Daily Beast ) in Wired

  • A new chapter in commercial space exploration

"We predict that 2024 will see successful maiden missions for a number of pioneering companies that are developing their own capabilities for returning material from space. This, in turn, will start to unlock the colossal potential of point-to-point delivery and space-based manufacturing."

Mark Boggett (CEO of Seraphim Space ) in TechCrunch

  • 'Chief AI Officer’ role becomes commonplace

"This trend will gain further momentum in the corporate world given a parallel trend already underway in government. President Biden’s recent executive order on AI requires every federal government agency to appoint a Chief AI Officer.”

Rob Toews (Partner at Radical Ventures ) in Forbes Magazine

  • AI supercharges medical breakthroughs

“Artificial intelligence is about to accelerate the rate of new discoveries at a pace we’ve never seen before… drug discovery requires combing through massive amounts of data, and AI tools can speed up that process significantly.”

Bill Gates in his Gates Notes blog

  • Wings will be clipped

“After marvelling at what AI can do in text, image and audio, video and film will take centre stage. Lots of AI businesses will go bust as the industry consolidates. Legal tussles will begin to clarify copyright and privacy issues. Google faces the outcome of crucial court cases that could clip its wings.”

Mark Sellman (Technology Correspondent at The Times ) in The Times

  • X (Twitter) will go bankrupt in 2024

"With X’s advertising tanking and attempts to create new sources of revenue falling flat, there’s a good chance it will happen… he [Musk] may be reckless enough to think he can put it through bankruptcy and still come out on top.”

Richard Waters (Silicon Valley Editor at Financial Times ) in the Financial Times?

  • X (Twitter) will thrive in 2024

"X isn’t going anywhere… I don’t agree with basically everything that’s happened at the company since Elon’s purchase. I also see what’s right in front of me – a platform so engrained in the ethos of its users that it’s bulletproof."

Geoff Gates (Creative Director at Boathouse ) in The Drum

  • Development of AI slows due to hardware shortages

"US, Japan and the Netherlands, have announced export restrictions that will impact certain countries’ ability to procure the most powerful GPUs and incentivise AI developers in affected regions to make do with less powerful hardware."

Martijn Loth (AI Legal Counsel for Taylor Wessing ) in Taylor Wessing

  • Apple focuses its development capacity on AI

“The timing is right for Apple to do this in AI, not just because if it waits too long its competition may eat up the market, but because the tech is ripe for their kind of improvement.”

Devin C. (AI writer for TechCrunch ) in TechCrunch

  • AI drives the value of both Meta and Tesla stocks back over $1 trillion

“Recent advances in AI will likely supercharge growth. Meta has introduced AI-driven tools for advertisers, and Advantage+ is "one of the fastest-growing ad products" in the company's history…. Tesla built a $1 billion supercomputer it dubbed Dojo, which reportedly came online earlier this year. Dojo will process all the data gathered by Tesla vehicles, and use the latest AI tech to improve its automated driving systems.”

Danny Vena, CPA, CGMA (Investment Analyst for The Motley Fool ) in The Motley Fool

  • Volatility in AI fund-raising

"The spread is already quite large (2021 pricing on one side), while the “have-nots” can barely get a round together. But in 2024, this will be more pronounced than ever before. Given the rapid pace of innovation around AI applications, any company that had a great 2023 might bet usurped in 2024."

Simon Wu (Partner at Cathay Innovation ) in TechCrunch

And two more from the bolder end of the prediction spectrum...

  • A 'digital double' gets elected to Congress

“Digital double engagement will be informed by powerful AI that will understand not only how real people talk and move, but also how you might move, act, and talk… Someone will make a combined digital double that will blend the best (or worst) of a few different people, and that AI persona, let’s call it Clyde Smoresly, will run for Congress in one of New York State’s upstate rural districts.… He’ll be ushered into office where he’ll achieve a 100% attendance and voting record.”

Lance Ulanoff (Editor in Chief of TechRadar ) in Tech Radar

  • Government crackdown on AI due to a deepfake national security threat

"The generative AI deepfake incident goes from national security crisis to full-blown public distrust in information delivered on the Internet... In all developed countries, governments make harsh laws that only news organisations approved by the government are allowed to disseminate news to the public... Traditional media companies approved by their governments for disseminating public news soar in value, with shares in The New York Times Company doubling."

Peter Garnry, CFA (Head of Equity Strategy for Saxo Bank ) in Saxo Bank
