Crystal balls. As the winter approaches and we enter the home stretch of this astonishing year for artificial intelligence, various big forecasts are being made as to what the future holds...
Recent predictions have included the optimistic view from JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dillon that “children are going to live to 100 and not have cancer because of technology”. Dillon also told Bloomberg he believes the next generation of employees would only need to work a 3.5-day week .
In contrast, the ‘Godfather of AI’ *, former Google researcher Geoffrey Hinton, told CBS’ 60 Minutes programme that AI has the potential to control humans through self-created code within five years. A more balanced view was recently provided by an in-depth TechCrunch interview with 10 investors covering everything from artificial general intelligence to what the next market entrants will look like.
(* We assume that's not to be confused with ‘Father of AI’ John McCarthy or ‘Grandfather of AI’ Alan Turing ... are we in danger of running out of paternal roles here?)

The reality of deepfakes. “Are social media platforms ready to handle the rise of AI deepfakes?” asked the YouTube star Mr Beast, alerting his 24 million followers to a faked video of him that was circulating on Twitter . A day earlier, actor Tom Hanks had raised the alarm regarding a deepfake dental plan advert using an AI-generated version of him.
The rise in quality and effectiveness of AI-generated deepfake technology is once again raising serious questions as to how it can be policed, not least for the potential political influence deepfakes could have. A faked audio recording of Keir Starmer released ahead of the Labour Party conference in the UK highlighted this danger , and the use of deepfake videos in the recent Slovakian election has led some observers to believe the result was swayed.

AI disaster prevention. A team of scientists has demonstrated an AI deep learning model with the capability to forecast earthquakes with 70% accuracy. The research paper published by the Universities of California at Berkeley and Santa Cruz, and the Technical University of Munich states that their algorithm has flexibility, self-learning capability, and the ability to scale in response to larger datasets, enabling it to improve in terms of accuracy over time.
Elsewhere, researchers at Harvard Medical School and the University of Oxford have announced a new AI tool named EVEscape with the ability to anticipate viral variations in diseases such as COVID-19. EVEscape could help predict the spread of viruses and ensure any vaccines are ‘future-proofed’ against mutations.
