KTL responds swiftly to restore our clients’ mobile networks following Storm Eowyn.
For our clients, the mission following the aftermath of Storm Eowyn was clear - to keep mobile network sites live until power supply was restored and minimise downtime for our clients’ customers. KTL deployed the necessary resources and equipment to facilitate power supply, repairs and fixes. In doing so, our teams faced challenging conditions with blocked access tracks due to fallen trees or overhead wires.
Vodafone Ireland- Transmission Assistance.
Ciaran mc dermott noted, “Under normal operations KTL provides transmission and RAN services under contract to VFI. When the storm hit, we swiftly directed our full resources to assist with storm recovery. To restore connectivity, we provided generators to maintain site operations. Our teams conducted multiple site visits nationwide, addressing issues such as realigning links blown off-pan and replacing equipment damaged during power outages. Our priority was to get services back on air quickly and safely.”
Three Ireland- Radio Access Network Assistance.
Darragh Corcoran noted, “The priority was to organise and deliver generators at high-priority sites to restore power and develop a refuelling plan for all generators. Our work was completed in some of the worst hit areas: Leitrim, Roscommon and Westmeath. The main focus was on critical hub sites in order to restore communications safely for locals and emergency services.”
In preparation for Storm Eowyn KTL, working on behalf of Huawei for Siro received advanced notice to extend our response capacity for potential power outages and network faults caused by the storm.
Adrian Meresciu explained, “With P1 alarms at 30 plus locations, KTL supported Huawei by increasing the number of available diesel generators at key Siro sites affected by power outages. Some of these sites, located in Galway, Letterkenny, Dundalk, Kildare, and Bray, served thousands of customers. To enhance our response, we also deployed additional trained personnel, enabling us to address multiple faults in parallel.”
Declan Maddy, Project Director Ireland commented: “It takes an event like Storm Eowyn to highlight the value and importance of network availability across the country for businesses, individuals, emergency services and homes. A big thank to the cooperation, commitment, and hard work of everyone involved in recent weeks.”
At KTL, safety isn’t just a priority—it’s a core value that drives everything we do.
That’s why receiving outstanding feedback from Britannia Health and Safety Management Consultants, who oversee Vodafone network delivery, is a testament to the dedication of our teams on the ground.
Following a site audit, Britannia highlighted the exceptional leadership and safety standards demonstrated by our PICW, Edgar Peneda: "I arrived on site and was welcomed by Edgar Paneda. He carried out a thorough site induction, explaining the team structure, subcontractor roles, emergency procedures, and defined muster points. A proactive change to the Traffic Management plan was also introduced to further enhance public safety. Welfare provisions were in place, and the entire team was working together to a high standard."
They further noted:"PICW Edgar provides an induction that would be the standard for all site managers to aspire to."
This recognition highlights the commitment of not just Edgar but the entire KTL team, from project management to site operations.
As Principal Contractor on the Vodafone North Project, we provide end-to-end solutions—covering design, installation, commissioning, civils, electrical work, and site management. Every step we have the focus on doing the job right first time with a constant focus on safety.
A huge well done to Edgar and the wider team.
The TechEx Sustainability Expo at the Olympia London brought together industry leaders, forward-thinking businesses, and emerging talent to explore the latest advancements in sustainable technology, ESG reporting, and digital transformation.
Among those in attendance was Ava Kerr, Project Manager at KTL who joined students from Strathclyde University.
The event brought together experts from across industries to engage in high-level discussions on IoT, cybersecurity, and ESG reporting—key themes shaping the future of sustainable business.
Ava Kerr's Perspective: The Value of Industry Exposure
"KTL sponsored a two-day trip to this event for four undergraduate students from the Department of Design, Manufacturing, and Engineering Management at Strathclyde University. These four students are supporting us with an Industrial Design Group Project this year.
It was an excellent opportunity for both KTL and the students to communicate and network with leading experts within renewable services and 5G communications.A standout case study came from KIER who shared how their 2023–2028 sustainability framework is helping drive clear, outcome-focused targets for people, planet, and places. It was a valuable learning experience to help gather knowledge and innovative ideas on what is cutting edge in the industry." – Ava Kerr, Project Manager at KTL.
KTL are proud to support ongoing learning for our team and invest in the next generation of engineers, designers, and sustainability leaders.
