Medicaid?
The Biden Administration has urged states to slow down their Medicaid disenrollment as patients and families rapidly lose coverage. Some states have already disenrolled as many as half of their Medicaid recipients, but the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) expressed concern since the primary reason cited for disenrollment was “procedural” which can be a violation such as an unreturned form or phone call. Federal officials are encouraging states to delay procedural terminations. Of the almost 1 million who have now lost Medicaid coverage, 1 in 5 were due to procedural reasons.?
340B
PhRMA, the lobby group for pharmaceutical manufactures, is targeting federal grantee 340B programs like Ryan White Clinics and HTCs. A new study claims federal programs are reimbursed 3.7 times more than they pay for 340B drugs, earning $8-12 billion in 2020, but the Berkeley Research Group (funded by Gilead) could not find what grantees are doing with that money. PhRMA has raised concerns about contract pharmacies causing diversion and duplicate discounts within DSH 340B programs, and, with this report, claims grantees exhibit the same problems. Between 2017 and 2020, contract pharmacies at federal grantee 340B programs increased 252% and make up over half (55%) of all contract pharmacy arrangements.
Prior Authorization
Congressional lawmakers are urging the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to change the prior authorization (PA) process which insurers use to approve certain medicines and procedures. Lawmakers seek a 24-hour limit for PA decisions regarding urgent care; a streamlined electronic approval process for routine services; and a transparency of metrics used for PA decisions.
