Welcome to FRIDAY FIVES, VOL. 65

Every Friday we highlight five things we have on our radar that we think should be on yours, too.

Here's this week's Friday Fives.

1. Red, white and who? (MEDIUM.COM)

Women who are running for the 2020 presidential primaries have decided to forego the norms of the traditional red, white and blue campaign colors for more diverse palettes. Over the last century, campaigns that have strayed from the classic RWB were few and far between, so what’s changed? The Trump presidency, for one. In an attempt to counter the current administration’s extreme partisan views and support for the far right, Democrats are aiming to redefine patriotism in America. With it’s most diverse range of candidates and campaigns yet, these new color palettes have become a symbol for inclusion and diversity. –CB

2. Order up some make-up (EATER.COM)

Social media rules our lives, and millennials are always on the lookout for the next big Instagramable experience. Now beauty brands are jumping on the bandwagon by introducing curated pop-up cafes to promote their products. Companies such as Glossier andL’Occitane are teaming up with local food vendors to provide unique experiences with the hope that you'll buy a side of mascara with your croissant. If you’re not into waiting in line for coffee and make-up, you can still get the best of both worlds in your kitchen pantry–KY

3. The city that needs to sleep (BROADLY.COM)

With the rise of brands like Casper and Brooklinen, we’re seeing a growing trend of startups that are trying to sell the dream of a good night’s rest to people who know they desperately need it. With longer work hours and the unending torment of Slack and email notifications, people are finding it harder to attain that illusive REM sleep. While these products might help, maybe the simplest solution is to just unplug from our endless scrolling and streaming and spend some time decompressing from our day. –MC

4. Paper, plastic, or…mason jar? (FASTCOMPANY.COM)

With the public’s ever-increasing concern about climate change and environmental sustainability, a new type of delivery service may soon become the new normal. The Wally Shop is a Brooklyn-based grocery delivery startup that aims to dramatically cut down on waste typically found in other food delivery options like boxes, plastic bags, and styrofoam containers. The startup focuses on reusable packaging for everything, including cotton mesh bags for fruits and vegetables to mason jars for dried pastas, grains, and coffee. And forget about carbon emissions from delivery vehicles—all orders are delivered exclusively by bicycle. Finally, a new way to be lazy that’s actually *good* for the environment.  –AB

5. Keeping it cool (STARTRIBUNE.COM)

The time of great suffering (aka, winter) is finally upon us. The polar vortex terrorizing our country has ushered in some of the coldest weather in recent memory. As New Yorkers grumble about temperatures dipping below 20 degrees, I think we all owe a shout-out to our friends in the midwest (especially in my home state of Minnesota) who are currently riding out wind chills of -60 degrees. For some perspective, that’s colder than Antarctica. Minnesotans may be a friendly bunch, but we aren’t wimps when it comes to weather (at least until the beer runs out). For a look inside the deep freeze, check out this photo series of Twin Cities residents refusing to let the weather get them down, even, I kid you not, wearing shorts. You are the true heroes of 2019.  –KJ
