A blueprint for sustainability in media production
By Helen Weedon, Managing Director, Radical Moves
Wales may only be a small nation, just half the size of the Netherlands and even smaller that the US state of New Jersey, yet it’s fast establishing itself as a trailblazer in making film and TV production more sustainable. It just so happens to be the first UK nation to take part in Screen New Deal, a route map produced by BAFTA albert, BFI and Arup, to help film and TV production become sustainable and reach net zero by 2050. Experts from BAFTA albert, Ffilm Cymru Wales, and Media Cymru recently shared their insights with me about media production sustainability in Wales, on a Radical Moves Broadcast Unscripted podcast.
Studio Standard participants making sustainability progress
BAFTA albert’s has published the final report on the second year (2023/24) of its Studio Sustainability Standard program. The Studio Sustainability Standard is a ratings system for film and TV studios and facilities which assesses each participating studio’s sustainability efforts across a variety of metrics. The process is one of the most thorough of its kind in the media industry and its methodology is being regularly upgraded.
The Studio Standard was launched in 2022 by albert in association with sustainable development consultancy Arup. Studios are graded across the following themes: Climate, Circularity, Nature, People, Management and Data. These themes are given different weighting with the “Climate” score counting for the most (36% of the total score), followed by “circularity” (20%) and nature (15%). Studios are awarded one of the following ratings: Participated, Pass, Good, Very Good, Excellent, and Outstanding.
