There are 5 Keys to Career Success:
1.??????Resume & Cover Letter
2.??????Interview Skillset
3.??????LinkedIn
4.??????Networking
5.??????Career Development
How do I know the 5 Keys stated above are essential? I have used these tools in my own success. Throughout my career, I have made 5 industry changes. I have risen to management and above in every industry by mastering the 5 Keys to Career Success.
As a career coach, I help my clients using the same strategies. And that is where the Anew Career Take newsletter comes in, I want to share what I know.
Let’s Dive In: The current job climate is rife with talk of the looming recession. If you are concerned about sustainability this month's newsletter will help assuage your fears.
Career Change: When to Walk Away from a “Good Job.”
One Monday morning, a woman drove into the parking garage of her "Good Job" and began to sob openly. The thought of walking into the building ignited a level of anxiety and sadness, causing her, a grown woman, to cry. But Why? She made great money, was in upper management, career goals she worked hard to achieve. In addition, the woman was getting married in two months. Why was she sad?
That woman was me. I had felt this way about my job for some time and could not figure out how to change my situation until the morning I cried in the garage. And that was it. I went into the building, asked to speak with my Director, and quit that very morning.
In hindsight, I should have left my job three months before I did. Then I could have given two weeks’ notice, and possibly avoided that morning.?
I was even offered to give two weeks' notice, but I was so burned out I asked if l could leave. Thankfully, my boss agreed and walked me out with no malice — the joys of having a good boss.
Was it the right time to leave with no employment prospects and a looming wedding?
My answer is YES!
I felt immediate relief. That morning turned into the happiest morning I experienced in months.
My co-workers, friends, and family did not have the same response. But I was not concerned about my future.
And upon reflection, I know why.
I was confident in my TRANSFERABLE SKILLS. I knew my value, and because I had risen to management positions in multiple industries throughout my career, I knew how to highlight my expertise and discuss my attributes in the interview process.
But most professionals, even those in management positions, do not know how to write or discuss their transferable skills. Are you one of these professionals? It is time to start focusing on your career development. Don’t wait for an employer to provide you with your road map? create your own!
Are you a Lifelong Learner? What You Need to Know About Career Pathing
Do you define yourself as a lifelong learner? I hope you do. I believe understanding the need for continued learning is the strongest way to build a successful career path.
Lifelong Learning - the provision or use of both formal and informal learning opportunities throughout people's lives in order to foster the continuous development and improvement of the knowledge and skills needed for employment and personal fulfillment https://www.dictionary.com/browse/lifelong-learning
What does this have to do with your career? Employers often rank innovation, adaptability, and problem solving as the top skills for potential candidates. Lifelong learning encompasses these sought-after qualities/skills.
There are so many tools at our disposal to brush up on soft and hard skills. There is Coursera, LinkedIn, Udemy, and many more platforms. Research the top skills for your industry or the industry you are interested in transitioning into and get learning!
Speaking of learning, how often are you reading? Make the time to add reading back into your schedule. Besides the benefit of new information, reading allows you to slow down and focus your mind on engaging with new ideas.
Each month I will share a book here that is worth your time.
I first read Emotional Intelligence 2.0, by Dr. Travis Bradberry & Dr. Jean Greaves in 2009. It was required in the corporate mentor program I was part of before becoming a manager. This is the first professional development book I connect with and enjoyed.
I decided to re-read the book this month and am gaining new insights over a decade later.
Book quote, “EQ is so critical to success that it accounts for 58 percent of performance in all types of jobs. It’s the single biggest predictor of performance in the workplace and the strongest driver of leadership and personal excellence.”
As the future of work is changing, I encourage you to read books meant to develop resilience and leadership skills. The work environment will change, but the need to exercise resiliency and leadership will remain.

Are You Planning Your Next Career Move?

Put First Things First
The first item on the checklist for a professional interested in making a career move is having an updated resume, right?
?– WRONG –
But WHY?
While I agree with the premise of having a great resume, if this is your first item, you are behind! A great resume has high-impact data and accomplishments relevant to the next position of interest. What happens if a job opportunity presents itself tomorrow? Are you ready?
Too often we are caught off guard by a layoff, restructuring, or closing of a company. Don't worry, I have a remedy.
Instead of waiting for the next opportunity, plan your next career move!
It starts by preparing for your next move from Day One.
On the first day of a new job/position CREATE an E-Folder in your personal email account. Anytime you have a work-related accomplishment add it to this new E-Folder.
Let me share a recent example – I have a client who surpassed 2020 Industry fundraising by 28% - during COVID! What a huge accomplishment. This one statement shows three key factors every employer is looking for…
1.??????Adaptability
2.??????Surpassing Company Goals
3.??????Commitment to an Organization
My client is not currently looking for a change, but I advised her to put this into her E-Folder. Now if any opportunity arises within or outside her organization, she is ready!
Most clients do not have an E-Folder when they first use my services. Beginning to create or update can feel overwhelming. Wouldn’t it be nice to open a folder and see your accomplishments at a glance?
Another reason for the folder is to remember the NUMBERS!
Ask any tech nut and they’ll tell you it’s all about the numbers – and they are right! Even in a non-profit, there are numbers to be met and goals to achieve. What if you had a major accomplishment a few years back, but did not keep any documentation? What is more impactful, vague recollection or concrete evidence?
Figure out what numbers drive your industry, organization, and role. Then add your accomplishments to your newly created E-Folder as you go.
What if you haven’t started an E-Folder?
DON’T WAIT! START NOW!
You cannot move forward if you don’t take steps to effect change. Begin from where you are today and MOVE FORWARD
Trust me, you will thank me later ??
