Welcome to the Event Horizon!

Welcome to the Event Horizon!

Issue No. 1 - Welcome to the inaugural edition of "The Event Horizon" – the newsletter that's so on the edge of event planning it practically defies gravity! We are Non Plus Ultra, and if we can tuck away our modesty for a moment, we have a portfolio of architecturally-distinguished, heritage-laden event venues that our clients and partners brilliantly activate.?

So what can you expect here?

Welcome to the wild, wacky, and absolutely bonkers world of event planning, where "pushing the envelope" isn't just a cliché—it's our morning coffee! Each issue will feature the following sections:

  1. In our electrifying "Pushing the Limits" section, we spotlight the mad geniuses of immersive experience design. These are the folks who look at a blank canvas and see a multi-sensory extravaganza. They're redefining "immersed" to mean "possibly lost in another dimension." Here, we also celebrate the pioneering technologist who are harnessing cutting-edge tech to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, making the impossible seem tantalizingly within reach.
  2. Then, there's "Looking for Inspo?" – our gloriously eccentric mood board. It's jam-packed with the brainiacs and dream weavers that make the world beautiful. Trust us, a smidge of their brilliance, and you'll be crafting events that make Burning Man look like a quaint garden party.
  3. "Current Events" is like an espresso shot for your FOMO. Here, we're serving up the hottest dish on the latest and greatest in brand activations and both corporate and public events. We’re spotlighting the show-stoppers, the headline-grabbers, and those "Did you just see that?" moments.
  4. In "Alchemy of Awesome" we're not just thinking outside the box... we're blasting it to smithereens. Forget the yawn-inducing "Best Practices." We'll spotlight some of the industry's brightest minds, serving up a feast of insider tips, sneaky tricks, and borderline genius methods that the top guns of event planning use to craft experiences that stick in memories like glitter in your hair (and we all know how impossible that is to get out).
  5. And because we're a tad narcissistic (but in a charming way, of course), "Plus This" is all about us, Non Plus Ultra. Here, we'll share our own exploits, adventures, and possibly a few misadventures, because let's face it, even we can't predict when the next event will turn into a spontaneous musical or a friendly alien encounter.

But here's the real kicker. We're not just here to talk. We're here to galvanize our community. We want "The Event Horizon" to be a launchpad for discussions, a melting pot for ideas, and a space where sharing isn't just encouraged, it's celebrated. So, dive in, explore, and let's turn this newsletter into a thriving hub for learning and collaboration.?

Got it? Great, then buckle up, buttercup, and prepare for liftoff! With "The Event Horizon" we're not just going on a journey, we're boarding a metaphorical rocket ship to the very edge of live entertainment excellence. Now, we’re ?fairly certain it's safe – I mean, who really knows what lies beyond the event horizon? But that's the thrill of Non Plus Ultra, right? Embracing the unknown, charting unexplored territories in the immersive-sphere, and possibly defying a few laws of event physics along the way. Let's blast off into this adventure together, and who knows? We might just discover a whole new world of extraordinary experiences!

Let's get started, shall we?

Part 1: Pushing the Limits

Let's dive headfirst into the deep end of creativity with this week's lineup of individuals who are not just pushing the envelope in immersive experience design—they're sealing it, stamping it, and mailing it to the future. In a techno-artistic symphony, Ai Weiwei's digital dialectics light up London, Elvis swivels in the digital realm, nature gets an AI revamp, and human cells become a visual extravaganza, all while Christopher Bauder turns the Riyadh skyline into a dynamic conversation of light and sound, illustrating the harmonious fusion of art, technology, and architectural storytelling.

Urban Giants in a Luminous Chat

This is DIALOGUE, a colossal art installation by Christopher Bauder for Noor Riyadh Light Art Festival 2023 that's transforming Riyadh's skyline into an epic narrative canvas. This isn't your typical light show. It's a visual conversation between two iconic towers, transformed into living, communicating characters expressing a spectrum of emotions, from playfulness to frustration, through a stunning symphony of 485 moving lights, 72 LED floodlights, and 4 ultra-bright lasers. It's a dazzling, high-tech conversation, symbolizing the power of connection and communication in our diverse world.

'ai vs AI': Ai Weiwei's Artistic Interrogation of AI

81 Days, 81 Questions: Ai vs. AI Lights Up London's Night

Considering how we swoon over public art almost as much as we respect our impending AI rulers, it should come as no surprise that this algorithmically perfect masterpiece caught our eyes. In an artistic showdown that sounds like the setup to a bizarre joke, Ai Weiwei is challenging artificial intelligence to a philosophical duel across 81 days, mirroring his own 81-day confinement. It's a spectacle of introspection and existential quandary, illuminating Piccadilly Lights with questions that probe everything from humanity's role in a crisis-ridden world to whether AI believes in karma. Ai's project, "Ai vs AI", is not just an art installation; it's a digital-age Socratic seminar, with each question broadcast globally, inviting not just answers but a reflection on the very act of questioning. Elvis Rebooted

Layered Reality's 'Elvis Evolution' Brings the King Back to Life, One Hologram Hip Thrust at a Time

Hey #eventprofs ... struggling to book music talent during this busy conference season? Well, Elvis has left the building... and entered the digital age. "Elvis Evolution" is the latest attempt to keep the King gyrating, this time through the wonders of AI and holographic projection, because why let a small thing like the natural end of life stop a good show? Premiering in London, with sequined jumpsuits set for Berlin, Tokyo, and Vegas - because nothing says "Presley" like a good hologram shimmy where he once truly ruled. The awesome folks at Layered Reality (the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 and "The War of The Worlds") are teaming up with Authentic Brands Group to ensure Elvis can still rock the stage, even if it's just his pixelated self. Fans can revel in an Elvis-themed bar, because obviously, what we've been missing in our lives is a virtual Elvis and a real cocktail. It's the perfect blend of nostalgia and modern tech - proving, once again, that you can't stop the beat, especially if it's backed by a hefty estate and a hologram. The Street (3 minutes)

Nature Goes Digital

In a move that makes Mother Nature look like she's slacking, Refik Anadol Studio has rolled out the 'Large Nature Model,' the world's first open-source AI model that's all about nature, but with zero bugs. It's the centerpiece of 'DATALAND'—a museum-meets-Web3 platform that's less about staring at old paintings and more about watching data do the salsa. Picture this: at the World Economic Forum, they're unveiling 'Living Archive: Nature,' an installation that’s part visual feast, part scent symphony, and totally an excuse to say, "I smell data." This is just the amuse-bouche, folks; the full course lands next month at London's Serpentine, proving that when art meets AI, it's not just a show, it's a whole tech-savvy ecosystem. The Visual Symphony of the Human Cell Atlas

Ferdi Al?c? and the amazing people that make up Ouchhh, pioneers in new media art, are taking a crack at the ultimate selfie – an "artistic self-portrait of humanity" with a little help from their friend, AI. Their playground? The Human Cell Atlas Project, which is basically the world's most ambitious group project, aiming to map every cell in the human body. Ouchhh's mission is to transform this mind-boggling scientific data into something that doesn’t just scream "science fair project." Using tools like single-cell RNA-seq and algorithms that sound more like sci-fi movie titles, they're stitching together a narrative that turns biology into a visual blockbuster. It’s a project that smashes the stereotype that artists and scientists can't play nice, proving that when they do. It’s not just a handshake but a full-blown, fireworks-in-the-sky kind of collaboration. It is also a vivid reminder of how art can emerge from the most unexpected places, and how technology can serve as a catalyst for creative expression. LinkedIn

Part 2: Looking for Inspo?

Now we come to our little corner of creative chaos, where industry wizards and visionary vanguards hang out. Inspiration lurks in the most unlikely places, and that is why we scour every nook and cranny of the globe to bring you the unexpected and the awe-inspiring. From Sydney's high-tech circus to LA's artful roller coasters, the Gold Coast's neon dreams, Amsterdam's Renaissance rave, and Nanjing's fusion of Monet and modernity, the world is turning its traditional entertainment venues into mind-bending, sensory-overloading, art-meets-technology wonderlands.

From Carnies to VR Bunnies

Luna Park's Big Top Enters the Matrix with 'Dream Circus'

Luna Park in Sydney has invested $15 million in transforming its traditional Big Top into the Sydney’s Immersive Big Top, a "teched-out" venue equipped with the latest projection, audio, and lighting technology. Their first show, 'Dream Circus,' created by Artists In Motion (AIM), offers an immersive 50-minute experience with imaginative environments. Luna Park aims to continually enhance this technology, inviting Sydney's creative talents to contribute to its future development. BNN (2 minutes)

Art Meets Roller Coasters

In another chapter of "things named Luna that refuse to be mundane," we have Luna Luna, an art-soaked amusement park once lost to time, now ready to dazzle Los Angeles. Think of it: a David Hockney forest that's more wonderland than woodland, a Salvador Dalí dome that'll spin your mind more than your stomach, and a Keith Haring carousel that's less merry-go-round, more moveable feast for the eyes. Thanks to Drake, this forgotten fantasy is now a reality, blending the thrills of an amusement park with the spills of contemporary art. It's where your childhood nostalgia for roller coasters meets your adult appreciation for fine art, proving once again that everything old (and artsy) can be new (and dizzying) again. LA Times (10 minutes)

Neon Dreams and Raindrop Scenes

IMAGINATOR's Surreal Playground of Light and Wonder Descends on the Gold Coast

Speaking of which, if Salvador Dali designed a playground and threw in a bit of Tron for good measure, you'd get IMAGINATOR, the art installation coming to the Gold Coast in 2024 that's part hallucination, part Instagram haven. Imagine bouncing off a multi-story ledge into a neon abyss, getting lost in a raindrop room, or chilling in a parachute cinema lounge – it's like a psychedelic funhouse where every room is a surprise party for your senses. Nick Ennis, the Creative Director, calls it a kaleidoscope of light, sound, and wonder, which is just a fancy way of saying, "Prepare to have your mind blown and your reality questioned, one LED wave at a time." The Urbanist (2 minutes)

The Artful Remix

When Mona Lisa Met House Music

Amsterdam's latest interactive art show, "Da Vinci: Genius," is taking immersive experiences to Renaissance heights, marrying the enigma of Leonardo with the flair of a 90s British DJ's soundtrack. It's an artful journey through Leonardo's mind, where The Last Supper gets a 3D makeover and the Mona Lisa chats back, blending the genius's obsession with nature, biology, and the unknown. This show, more than just a display, is a deep dive into the life of a man who was as much a master of procrastination and unfinished business as he was of art and innovation, proving that sometimes the most brilliant minds are also the most beautifully chaotic. Catholic Harold (6 minutes)

From Monet's Blooms to Beeple's Bytes

Art Fusion at Deji: Nanjing's Cultural Kaleidoscope

Nanjing's Deji Art Museum, once an under-the-radar haven for ancient Chinese relics, has hit the refresh button, now flaunting everything from Monet's floral brushstrokes to Beeple's digital dystopias. Nestled in the heart of Surfers Paradise, this museum's not just about traditional high ceilings and ancient ceramics anymore. It's an eclectic blend of the old and the new, hosting exhibitions that make you rethink still lifes and reimagine the relationship between humans and nature. With a collection that's as diverse as the city's own cultural identity, Deji is turning the subtlety of Nanjing's art scene into a bold statement, proving that in the world of art, it's okay to mix ancient pottery with cutting-edge pixels. The Great Indoors

Digital Wilds: Sir David Attenborough Guides the Ultimate Indoor Safari"

Tinker imagineers, in what seems like a fairly successful attempt to outdo actual planet Earth, have rolled out the BBC Earth Experience. It's an immersive extravaganza where guests can deep-dive into nature's wonders, minus the actual diving or nature. Narrated by Sir David Attenborough, it’s sounds like a global tour for those who love the idea of adventure but prefer their wild animals and breathtaking landscapes served up with a side of tech-savvy comfort. And let’s face it, in a world where your closest brush with nature is often a houseplant, the BBC Earth Experience is like a much-needed breath of fresh, digitally-rendered air. Part 3: Current Events

Prepare for a serious case of FOMO as we now serve up a tantalizing peek into the the most buzz-worthy, jaw-dropping spectacles and brand and event shenanigans – the kind that'll have you kicking yourself for not being there! In a narrative spun from Brooklyn's flirt with history, Dior's AI runway, Fendi's nostalgic Pokémon style, IKEA's luxury masquerade, CES's techy theme park wonderland, Instagram's top event trends, and the communal healing of "The Hum", the event industry is telling a story of surprise, blending the old and new in an immersive dance of delight.

Brooklyn's Bizarre Boudoir

'Salon of Seduction' Shakes Up 'Poor Things' Premiere with Victorian Verve and Cocktails

Oh, Brooklyn. Where else would you find a “Salon of Seduction” that isn't just a quirky new barbershop? Searchlight Pictures, in a stroke of marketing genius or madness (jury's still out), transformed Maison Premiere into a Victorian playground for the “Poor Things” film premiere. The sold-out event for the 21-plus crowd, featuring a live show that probably made Queen Victoria herself blush in her grave. Inside, guests were greeted by a “madame” and her entourage. Each act of the show was a melodramatic ode to the film's themes, complete with oysters, gold-flaked pastries, and crafty cocktails. For most of us unlucky souls who missed out, there were mobile coffee carts in NYC and L.A., dispensing not just caffeine but a taste of the 'Poor Things' experience, a sip of the spectacle that proves yet again that our old friend Brett Hyman and his NVE Experience Agency can turn a movie premiere into a Gotham gossip gala. AI Meets Haute Couture

Dior X Blends Fashion with Futuristic Tech in a Dazzling Pop-Up Experience

Introducing Dior X, a pop-up experience Dior is enthusiastically ushering onto the scene. They're merging high fashion with what they're calling 'cutting-edge GenAI technology'. It sounds like the latest jump onto the AI bandwagon, but hey, they've got my attention, so I guess it works. (And thanks for that, AMAR ALNEMER // ??!)They're promising a whole new world where cutting-edge trends meet artificial intelligence. They've painted it as the next big revolution in luxury retail and technology. Now, that's some big talk. But kudos to them for dreaming big, right? So, if you've got an adventurous spirit and a soft spot for fashion, Dior X is ready to show you what they've got. Let's see if they can live up to their own hype. But remember, a healthy measure of skepticism never hurt anyone. After all, innovation is not just about making a splash, it's about making a difference. LinkedIn

Pokémon Power-Up in Designer Threads

Catch 'Em All in Style: Fendi's Luxe Leap with Pokémon and Streetwear

Keeping it on the runway, Kristoff D’oria di Cirie expertly unpacks Fendi's latest move: teaming up with The Pokémon Company International and streetwear label Frgmt Design Clothing LLC. It's nostalgia meets luxury, a combo as strange as milk duds in popcorn that somehow works. And hey, it's the Year of the Dragon, so why not go all-in with life-sized Dragonite statues. Fendi is selling more than just clothes: it's about striking an emotional chord with consumers. Pokémon, those creatures from our childhood, are now dressed in designer wear. It's like your childhood pet became a supermodel. And in our digital age, the pop-up's visual appeal is social media catnip, spreading the brand's message far and wide. But most importantly, it's a lesson in blending nostalgia and luxury seamlessly. LinkedIn

Ikea's Mischievous Makeover

IKEA, the budget-friendly furniture giant, decided to give itself a high-end makeover by inventing a posh-sounding brand, "Eureka Spiritis." They created an over-the-top commercial, complete with moonlit cello playing and lofty claims about their kitchen furnishings. But the grand reveal was that it's just good ol' Ikea, complete with a wardrobe change from a fancy blazer to an Ikea yellow shirt. They even tricked media and influencers into attending a faux brand launch event. Ikea's message? You don't need a premium brand for quality kitchens... just head to Ikea and enjoy the Swedish meatballs. Adweek (2 minutes)

When CES Became the Happiest Place on Earth

CES 2024: Where Tech Meets Theme Park Thrills

In a dazzling fusion of CES and Disneyland, big brands at CES 2024 ditched the yawn-inducing product demos for full-blown, immersive theme park experiences that had attendees queuing up like it's the release day for the latest iPhone. Walmart's 4D retail ride had folks sniffing strawberries and craving birthday cake, while Netflix turned its booth into a top-secret, immersive trailer viewing, complete with sensory overloads—because who needs a simple TV screen anymore? And Sony? They went full "Ghostbusters," turning the CES floor into a New York street complete with a marshmallow splatter fest, because apparently, what we really need in tech is to feel like we're walking in a giant dessert. So, buckle up, marketing world! It looks like the future of brand engagement is less PowerPoint, more roller coaster, and possibly requiring a theme park map just to navigate it. This is where the wildly unexpected, the ingeniously immersive, and the refreshingly sustainable come together to redefine our industry.

Hands-On Brand Love: The Power of Experiential Engagement

In an age where traditional marketing feels as engaging as elevator music, experiential marketing is the ripping guitar solo so awesome that it you must raise your lighter. Think of trading in those dusty old billboards for live events so vibrant, they'd make a Mardi Gras parade seem like a high school halftime show. Or creating immersive experiences so engrossing, they'd have a time-traveler checking his era. According to the soothsayers of EventTrack, experiential marketing turns a whopping 91% of attendees into potential customers, with 40% turning into die-hard brand loyalists. It's like finding out your blind date is actually a secret superhero – suddenly, you're all in. So, if your marketing strategy still feels like it's stuck in the era of "rotary phones," it's probably time to splurge on that "new iphone." The Unpredictable Plot Twists of Burickson's Architectural Narratives

In the eclectic world of Abraham Burickson, architecture isn't just about erecting walls and roofs: it's an art form that plays with your emotions like a cat chasing a laser pointer. In his book Experience Design: A Participatory Manifesto, the focus shifts from creating objects to crafting experiences. Imagine turning a coffee cup into a theme park ride — that's the kind of twist we're talking about. ?This means diving into a client's world with the intensity of a journalist chasing a lead, piecing together their values and aspirations to shape spaces that are not just functional, but narratively rich. The approach here involves a cocktail of empathy and engagement, tools that turn designers into conductors of emotional symphonies. It's about building worlds and narratives that transform spaces into stages where every element plays a part in the drama. And in this script, the unknown isn't a villain to be vanquished but a plot twist that adds suspense and vitality, ensuring that each design journey is as unpredictable as it is fulfilling. Amazon

Celebrating Black Girl Magic

In Denver's 16th Street Pavilion, the Museum for Black Girls offers an immersive experience, celebrating the history, achievements, and vibrant culture of Black women and girls. It's a space bursting with life, from pink walls and love letters to a ceiling adorned with flowers, highlighting Black women's stories and contributions. A huge shoutout to Charmaine Billingsley and Von Ross for their incredible creativity and dedication in bringing this vision to life. New Year, New Bohemia

New Bohemia NYE is an adventure co-created by the Vau de Vire Society & Opel Productions at NPU's Mint

New Year's Eve isn't amateur night if you're in the company of professionals. New Bohemia at Non Plus Ultra's San Francisco Mint, co-created by Vau de Vire Entertainment and Opel Productions, was the New Year's Eve extravaganza that makes braving the outside world worth it. Picture the historic Mint transformed into a sensory overload with 23 immersive environments, 7 dance floors, and a Kink Lounge, which we assume is as intriguing as it sounds. You could find poets and performers, aerialists and DJ’s, burlesque dancers and live painters, acrobats and absinthe hawkers; galleries full of art and visual treats, crimson busts and decadent costumes; experiential, playful and interactive opportunities, and surprises. In short, enough variety n the different corners, courtyards, chambers and titillating dark corners and pathways of this unique venue to make your head spin faster than a disco ball. It was like stepping into a parallel universe where every corner screams, "This is why you didn't stay home with a pizza and your cat!." YouTube
