A welcome entente cordiale between entrepreneurs throughout the world
A couple of stories about entrepreneurs have caught my eye recently and got me thinking about the benefits of sharing our business experiences.
The first story concerns a group of 24 British business leaders travelling to Italy to support budding entrepreneurs in that country. They are working with the 012 Factory, a start-up incubator where trainers from sectors including IT, sport and new technologies take part in seminars, workshops and advice clinics to help the 30 budding Italian business starters there.
The UK trainers are helping to deliver modules in topics such as HR, financing and communications. One of the British participants said it was a great experience being able to take time out from his company to support others in their business endeavours. He added that many were looking to collaborate with UK businesses, which can only be good news for UK Plc.
The second story related to the number of overseas-born entrepreneurs creating businesses in Britain. Research earlier this year showed that the highest number of foreign entrepreneurs come from India (16,272) and Pakistan (9,903), closely followed by Germany, China and Nigeria, all with between 7-8,000 each.
One reason for the growth in these numbers is the government’s introduction of the Entrepreneur Visa, which gives foreign-born people the chance to establish a business here and earn a fast-track to British citizenship.
And there’s the added benefit to Britain in that foreign-born entrepreneurs can often open doors for us in fast-growing economies around the world. All those involved in knowledge-sharing can benefit in some way and transmitting our experience and expertise gathered from years in business to the new generation is something to be commended.Far from viewing our business counterparts from other countries as competition, Britain is opening its doors and hearts to them, offering a place for them to build their businesses or sharing our experiences with them in their own country.
As a British entrepreneur who has grown several businesses from scratch over the last decade or so, both here and in Continental Europe, I welcome this sense of entente cordiale with fellow business brains from all over the world. Anything that creates jobs and economic growth here in Britain or abroad must only be welcomed.
