Hi, I’m Sharon. I’m the founder of Communilogue, an empathy consultancy; international keynote speaker; author; and person who stutters. I’ve spent my career teaching audiences how to make empathy actionable.?
I’ve had at least 1,000 conversations with people from different walks of life about what empathy actually looks like in their lives – both personally and professionally.?
So how did I get here? I stutter, and I came to a point in my life when I had to overcome my fear of just physically talking to people. I decided to pursue public speaking. And, to my surprise, speaking – and stuttering – to audiences about empathy helped those listening immensely.?
Empathy at (Remote) Work
As we take a moment to reflect upon the whirlwind that was the past several years, one can't help but notice the glimmers of hope that have arisen amidst the storm. I would be lying if I said the pandemic hasn’t pushed my boundaries to the extreme benefit of my career. And, if you take a moment to consider this for yourself, you might also see that you were stretched in a positive way.?
The world has shown remarkable resilience, and remote work has emerged as one of the silver linings in a time of unprecedented change. In this dawn of the hybrid workforce, where the home office has become the new norm, empathy is the guiding star that can lead us through uncharted waters. It is truly the thread that connects remote teams together, creating a tapestry of support, understanding, and connection.

But what exactly does empathy in remote work entail?
It is about understanding that while the technology connects us, it is the human connection that sustains us. It is recognizing that every team member, though physically distant, carries their own set of challenges and triumphs.
By embracing empathy, we can create spaces where people feel seen and heard. We can foster environments that not only value productivity but also the well-being of every individual. We can build bridges across virtual divides.
As we move forward in this brave new world of remote work, let us carry empathy as our compass. Let it guide our actions, our communications, and our intentions. For it is through empathy that we will find our true north in a sea of change.
Over the next few months, we'll delve deeper into the facets of empathy in remote work in this series. We are in this together.
