ADVERTISING
'Winning Isn't Comfortable'
Nike's latest TVC commercial shows the pain marathon runners know all too well.
The music track choice is perfect - the 1976 hit 'Love Hurts' by Nazareth.
I love that this is an ad about running, that doesn't show any running.
When it comes to ideas, it's the unexpected ones that stand out the most.
Check it out in the links at the end of the newsletter.
IDEA
There's been a spike in phone snatching in London.
So agency JOAN Creative in London added to the spikes, literally.
Their tongue in cheek idea is to make Londoners more aware of the issue.
The punk in me loves the design and the idea.

DESIGN BOOK
Half a century of band logo designs all in one book - Logo Rhythm.
When I was at school I used to practice redrawing my favourite band logos. My technical drawing folder and my art class folder where emblazoned with the logos of the Sex Pistols, The Clash, Adam & The Ants, Bowie, and more.
Writer Jim K Davies and designer Jamie Ellul have put together what could very well be the most concise collection of band logos to date, I've only seen it online, I am looking forward to getting my hands on a copy.
You can read more about it in the links below.
PHOTOGRAPHY
'The Women Who Changed Photography'
A new book showcases 50 trailblazing female photographers who captured the world through their lenses.
Published by Lawrence King Publishing it is available now.

QUOTE
“But unless we are creators we are not fully alive. What do I mean by creators? Not only artists, whose acts of creation are the obvious ones of working with paint of clay or words. Creativity is a way of living life, no matter our vocation or how we earn our living. Creativity is not limited to the arts, or having some kind of important career.” – Madeleine L’Engle
PRINT'S NOT DEAD
And iconic New York magazine is celebrating its 40th birthday.
PAPER magazine has spent four decades covering art, fashion, music, pop culture and more in New York City.
I was an avid reader way before I moved to NYC.
To celebrate this milestone, the magazine has gone back to its beginnings and produced four editions of a 16-page fold-out zine.
New York-based graphic designer and art director Callum Abbott was behind the work.
I've said it before, I'll say it again - I am so glad print is not dead.

ART
If you're a fan of pop art you might like this exhibition.
To celebrate its 10th anniversary, Fondation Louis Vuitton has put on an exhibtion called "Pop Forever, Tom Wesselman &...", the show is an homage to the pop art era of the 60s featuring 150 works by Wesselman and 70 pieces from 35 other prominent artists.
The other artsists include - Roy Lichtenstein, Yayoi Kusama, KAWS, Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, and more.
If you're in Paris, this seems like a not to be missed show.

CREATIVE DIRECTION
Part of being a good Creative Director is to be able to navigate and steer around a whole lot of obstacles.
You could say I am a Creative Director for Creative Directors.
?? So, who is my CD Coaching for?
- Anyone currently in a CD role and those who aspire to be.
?? Why bother being coached?
- This role is not easy and you can often find yourself unprepared or feel that you also need some direction.
- The industry does a poor job of preparing people to step up to the CD position.
- 2024 marks my 25th year since I first became a CD and I have held CD, ECD, and CCO roles across three continents, so I have amassed a lot of experience to share.
?? What will we cover?
- Directing the work, not doing the work.- Leading by example, not exhaustion.- Winning the trust of staff & clients. - Being a better decision-maker. - Navigating agency processes. - Finding your leadership voice. - Being a good brief guardian. - Holding the ladder for staff. - Building a creative culture. - Having a vision & mission. - Staff motivation & morale. - Getting to better ideas. - Picking your battles. - Elevating the work. - Making it fun. - Hiring talent. - And more…

EDUCATION
BBC Studios & Rolex launch 'Arts in Motion' Masterclasses.
As a creative, you should never stop learning.
These new Masterclasses have been designed to inspire the next generation of artists.
Six 23-minute masterclasses make up the series, all airing on the BBC News Channel.
Mentors include actor Brian Cox and pianist Yuja Wang, among others.
There needs to be more initiatives like this, because a more creative world would be a better world - well, that's my opinion anyway.
You can read more in the links below.
ART Part 2
KAWS has curated a new show called 'The Way I See It' in New York.
On at The Drawing Center on Wooster Street until January 25, 2025, the show featured over 350 artworks, all personally curated by KAWS.
Covering the 20th-21st centuries, the works on paper include pieces by Willem de Koonig, R. Crumb, Pablo Picasso, FUTURA 2000, DAZE, KAWS, and more.

PACKAGING DESIGN
I'm a sucker for some good, unexpected packaging design.
And this new work from Purple, a Stockholm-based creative agency is right up my alley.
The brand is called Contraband, a new range of pre-mixed cocktails, and the design suits the name perfectly.
You can see more designs and read about the project in the links below.
JUST A THOUGHT
Have you ever wanted to write a book?
A standard book may have around 70,000 - 80,000 words. So, if you wrote just 300 words a day, the length of an average email or some posts on LinkedIn, and did that five days a week, you'll have 70,000 words in 46 weeks.
In other words, you could have a book written in less than a year. Now imagine if you could write 1,000 or 2,000 words per day?
Just a thought.
