Welcome to #ClimateShot: The agricultural innovation race to save our planet
This is a make-or-break year to secure meaningful commitments in addressing the climate crisis and putting our food systems on a sustainable path before it's too late. The agricultural sector is not on track to support goals of the Paris Climate Agreement and an 'innovation gap’?exists in spite of considerable investment into agricultural innovation. Now, more than ever, urgent, collaborative, global action is needed.
ClimateShot answers that call.
It’s a global campaign to transform innovation in agriculture through major international commitments at COP26 on investment, public private partnerships and the sharing of knowledge and evidence about what works, where and how in transforming agriculture in ways that protect nature and limit emissions.
For more than a year, we have been working with our partners at the UK’s?Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, on a global campaign to transform agricultural innovation for people, nature and climate, in the lead up to COP26.
The campaign got a high-profile soft launch by?Nigel Topping, the High Level Champion for COP26 in November 2020, and a formal launch by?Lord Zac Goldsmith, UK Minister of State for Pacific and the Environment at the Climate Adaptation Summit in January.
Since then, global support has been pouring in for the campaign, with Dutch Deputy Prime Minister?Carola Schouten, US Deputy Secretary for Agriculture?Jewel Bronaugh, UAE Minister for Food and Water Security,?Mariam Almheiri, and UK Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Farming, Fisheries and Food,?Victoria Prentis?voicing their support in our key events over the course of 2021.
It is not only countries, but leading NGOs, international organizations, farmer organizations, and businesses lending their support for the campaign.
This week our campaign reached a milestone, with the launch of?#ClimateShot, which brings together the ambition, examples, and allies to realise the vision of the campaign through?a Global Action Agenda?to be launched officially at COP26 in November.
The goals of this action agenda could usher in a new era for agricultural innovation, where climate and nature is at the core of our efforts to produce, distribute and consume food
The need for #ClimateShot is undeniable.
Between USD 50–70 billion gets spent on agricultural innovation in the Global South, and only 7% of this investment has environmental objectives. It’s also estimated that over USD 15 billion in additional investments in research and development is needed to step up to the challenges of climate change in food systems.
