Welcome to Climate and Education

Hi there,??

I’m Caroline Preston , a journalist for The Hechinger Report. For years, I’ve reported on the consequences of climate change for schools and students. That work has taken me around the country —

• to California, where I met students, teachers and counselors trying to cope with the mental health toll of devastating wildfires;
• to Oklahoma, where I reported on a middle school teacher educating her students about climate change in a district dominated by the oil and gas industry; and?
• to New Jersey, where I observed a PE class that combined climate lessons with physical activity as part of the state’s mandate to introduce students to climate change in just about every subject

I’m inspired by the work I see happening in early childhood, K-12 and higher education? to both prepare young people for an altered workforce and help reduce the impact of climate change on our planet. That’s why I’m launching a newsletter to go deeper on this subject.

I will bring you stories about communities shifting their workforces to account for the green transition, innovations in how early childhood education is helping bolster young kids’ resilience, and steps that higher ed leaders and students are taking to decarbonize their campuses and beyond. I’ll also highlight the work of others, including Hechinger columnist Anya Kamenetz , as well as writers and researchers covering climate and education elsewhere online.
