Welcome to the BetterMen Bulletin
Life is busy and time is precious. This monthly bulletin saves you time and effort by providing you with a range of resources relating to all things?men and mindset.
Don't just read the quotes. Instead, take a moment to consider them and hold them up against your life.
This month’s quote theme is?Success.?Research suggests the average man isn’t happy; in fact, the average man rates his happiness at just a 6.3 out of 10. For me, this isn’t surprising, particularly when you consider for men, there’s a strong correlation between success and happiness. After years of conditioning, most men fall into the trap of thinking success means more, bigger, better, which in turn fuels their need to work and creates their unhappiness.
Sit down, take a minute to read, reflect or journal on the prompts presented.
Continuing the theme above, this month’s prompt theme is?Happiness.?Happiness is something we need to start shifting focus towards as part of our broader life strategy. If we did, I am convinced there would be less poor mental health, midlife crisis and divorce. Until you’re happy, you won’t recognise or appreciate your successes.
1. My happiest memory is…
2. When I feel happy, I also feel…
3. If I wanted to cultivate more happiness in my life, I would need to…
This month’s BetterMen video is titled? Is Your Life a Struggle.?Some men unknowingly condition themselves to exist in a constant state of struggle. It proves to be draining and detrimental on many levels. In this short video, I share a simple exercise I use with my clients, one that is effective time and time again. Don’t accept the struggle, counter it, challenge it, change it.
This month’s podcast recommendation is?Modern Wisdom. In this episode, Paul Millerd, a strategy consultant and author explains why the old stories we were told about success and happiness no longer apply. Expect to learn why the road between success and happiness might have a shortcut and how optimising for freedom gave Paul everything he wanted from his life.
With Wimbledon in full flow, this month’s book recommendation is:?Open?by Andre Agassi. From early childhood, Agassi hated tennis. Forced to hit hundreds of balls a day, he resented the constant pressure, even as he drove himself to become a superstar of the sport. Even if you’re not a tennis fan, this book is for you! It’s taut, and brave and describes Agassi’s inner battles and relationship conflicts.

This month’s TED Talk is:?The Power of Vulnerability?by thought leader and author, Brené Brown. In this TED Talk, Brown poses provoking questions around authenticity and worthiness; how we cultivate courage and compassion, and the thing we all need – connection. If you find this useful, she has a range of resources from a documentary to one of the best leadership books I’ve ever read: Dare to Lead.
June’s?Men & Mountains?started, for a few individuals, with a wild camp on Saturday night. Missing the heavy rain and thunderstorms that had hit South Wales earlier in the day, we met at Storey Arms and walked the short distance to set up camp next to Llyn Cwm Llwch. Early Sunday, we collapsed camp, enjoyed a ‘refreshing’ dip in the Llyn and set off to meet the rest of the men.
This month’s M&M’s saw us step off into a new area of the Brecon Beacons. We were well away from the typical tourist traps and it felt like we had the Beacons to ourselves. Despite the new area, there were the usual stiff climbs, stunning views and quality conversations.
With a group of 16 men taking on the Yorkshire 3 Peaks next month, there’s no walk in South Wales in July.
Our next walk in the Beacons is on Sunday, 28 August.
