July 2024 Job Report
The July 2024 Employment Situation Report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showed an increase of 114,000 jobs, with the unemployment rate rising to 4.3%. Employment gains were notable in healthcare (+55,000), construction (+25,000), and transportation and warehousing (+14,000), while the information sector saw a decline of 20,000 jobs.?
Healthcare continued to drive job growth, with significant increases in home health care services (+22,000), hospitals (+20,000), and nursing and residential care facilities (+9,000). Construction also saw steady gains, particularly in specialty trade contractors (+19,000). Transportation and warehousing experienced growth in couriers and messengers (+11,000) and warehousing and storage (+11,000), offset by a decline in transit and ground passenger transportation (-11,000).?
Average hourly earnings increased by 0.2% to $35.07, reflecting a 3.6% increase over the past year. The average workweek edged down by 0.1 hour to 34.2 hours, indicating slight adjustments in labor demand.
