Welcome Back to Our Journey Through the Startup World

Welcome Back to Our Journey Through the Startup World

In our first installment of this series, "Diving into the Startup World: My Journey and Lessons Learned," we explored the exhilarating yet unpredictable path of working in startups. I shared personal insights from my transitions between companies and offered job-hunting tips that spanned a variety of industries, from logistics to supply chain and beyond. We discussed the importance of seeking peace in adversity, building supportive networks, and continually reviewing and updating your skills.

Today, in "Getting Prepared," we'll dive deeper into how to strategically build and refine the resources crucial for your job-hunting campaign. I'll guide you through extracting valuable experiences from your past roles, optimizing your public profiles, and leveraging your professional network to enhance your visibility in the job market. Whether you're just starting out or looking to pivot your career, these actionable steps are designed to simplify and enrich your journey. Let's get prepared to make your job search as effective and efficient as possible.

How to Extract Valuable Skills and Experiences for Your Profile

Use the following ideas to mine your past roles to identify the experiences that are important for your profile and resume:

  • Use LinkedIn to find others in your areas of expertise and mine their profiles for topics and experiences to include.
  • Use the LinkedIn job search functions to review job descriptions for skills that should be in your profile. Pay attention in the Qualifications section to the "skills missing on your profile" section.
  • Select one or more contract service companies like meta experts and apply to be on their bench. The application will include building a personal profile that will remind you of experiences that are important parts of your past experiences.
  • Sign up for independent research companies like Guidepoint, AlphaSites, and Third Bridge. In addition to the value gained from the application process, you will be in position to generate some short term income. Working with these firms will also give insight to areas of the economy that are hot. Although landing work from any of these organizations may take time, their onboarding processes will ask you good questions that may lead to new thoughts and ideas.

As you gather inputs, filter the list to support the overall arc of your career and your future goals.

Optimizing Your LinkedIn Profile for Maximum Impact.

Next, use what you've learned to so far to improve your public profile. Use your LinkedIn profile as a long form resume with all the skills and experiences that matter to your job hunt. As you become more focused in your job search, update your profile further.

Using one of the AI writing assistants like ChatGPT can help to refine your profile but be sure to adapt their language to sound like you.

Get Help from Trusted Colleagues

Many of your past colleagues will be eager to assist you.

  • Reach out early to build a bench of people who you can ask for Letters of Recommendation and LinkedIn Endorsements. They will also start networking on your behalf.
  • Ask a subset of colleagues to create their recommendations with little direction on content from you. These assessments will give you additional input on your strengths.
  • Ask another group for specific endorsements based on specific prompts can also help.
  • To make writing those easier on your support team, include a list of skills and experiences you would like them to highlight.
  • Also suggest that feeding your desired list into ChatGPT will practically write the endorsement for them.
