Winner of the Week: WeTransfer
WeTransfer just scored big with a feature that tackles one of its users' biggest headaches:
File expiration dates.
Known for its simplicity, WeTransfer has always had a frustrating quirk—links that vanish before you remember to download them. But now, in a move that’s both clever and much-needed, they’ve introduced a new “Save for Now” option on their mobile app, letting users extend file expiration dates up to 30 days. It’s a funny yet effective update, hitting just the right tone, and likely to be warmly received by WeTransfer’s creative user base.
The announcement wasn’t without its hiccups. WeTransfer initially claimed that “links will no longer expire,” only to later clarify that the extension depends on your plan. Despite the confusion, this smart marketing move has landed them a well-deserved win.
Loser of the Week: Blake Lively’s Tone-Deaf Promotion
Blake Lively’s promo tour for It Ends With Us—a film about domestic violence—has become a masterclass in bad marketing. Instead of focusing on the film’s serious themes, Lively used it to push her husband’s gin and her own haircare line, complete with cringe-worthy cocktail names like “Ryle You Wait,” after the film’s abusive character.
It’s baffling that a star with a big PR team could make such a tone-deaf move in 2024. Instead of sparking meaningful discussions, this misstep has left a bad taste, making Lively this week’s clear loser.
