Welcome to Ariel Baska's inaugural advocacy and artistry newsletter!

As a multi-disciplinary artist, I’m always involved in a number of wonderful projects, but 2024 has already been exceptionally rewarding for me.?

In February, I was flown to Berlin to speak at Final Girls Berlin (about Monstrous Me, my work in progress - presentation available soon on their YouTube channel) and the European Film Market (about the Accessibility Scorecard and Impact Report, coming soon).

While there, I met some exceptionally talented women and non-binary creators in horror, as well as great disability advocates in film.?

I also took a tour of Berlin following in the footsteps of one of my favorite films, Andrej Zulawski’s Possession (1981). In the Platz der Luftbrücke, I went so far as to re-enact the famous metro scene. Video included care of Heather Petrocelli (whose book Queer for Fear is my current must-read recommendation!).

In March, I won a $20,000 grant for Monstrous Me from Virginia Humanities, that will go to the editing and community-based impact campaign for the project. The sizzle for Monstrous Me is available to watch here.

Coming Soon:

April is already chock full of goodies as I am presenting an Access:Horror sidebar with ReelAbilities and Lincoln Center on April 9th on the topic of Tropes and Traps in documentary and horror storytelling with friends and artists Nasreen Alkhateeb, Ophira Calof, and Cashmere Jasmine. It is a free event, and you can find more information about how to register here.

On April 13th, my first horror short, Our First Priority, will have a cast and crew reunion on Eventive, a donation-based event to celebrate the little film that could. Get your tickets here.

I’m hoping this newsletter will continue as a chronicle of my adventures every two months or so. If you’d like to keep up with me more regularly, you can always find me on my socials or my weekly podcast, Ride the Omnibus, parked at the intersection of pop culture and social justice.

Warmly,

P.S. I’ll always share news first on socials, so follow along for updates! ??
