?? What's New This Week ??
Google has initiated a?$20M accelerator program to support nonprofits using generative AI,?starting with 21 organizations, including Quill and the World Bank. The six-month program offers?funding, technical training, and Google employee support?to develop AI tools for various social impacts. Despite high interest,?nonprofits face challenges like cost and resource constraints in adopting AI,?prompting Google’s effort to facilitate AI integration and enhance productivity and effectiveness in the nonprofit sector.
Following its $1.25B investment in September, Amazon has invested a further $2.75B in Anthropic, which has just released Claude 3, reportedly more powerful than OpenAI’s GPT-4, outperforming both on industry benchmark tests. This brings Amazon’s Anthropic?investment to $4B, their biggest-ever outside investment.?
Under the deal,?Anthropic will use AWS as its primary cloud provider and Amazon’s chips?for “mission-critical work" including safety research and future models. Amazon's $4B investment in Anthropic will no doubt raise alarm bells with US antitrust regulators following investigations into big tech investments in start-ups (like Microsoft’s $10B investment in OpenAI) to ensure fair competition.
xAI just?announced?Grok-1.5, the latest iteration of its open-source large language model, boasting improved reasoning capabilities and a massive 128,000 token context length.
Grok-1.5 has notable improvements in coding and math, achieving high scores on benchmarks like MATH (50.6%), GSM8K (90%), and HumanEval (74.1%). The model will soon be available to early testers and existing Grok users on X. Rumors suggest that Grok-1.5 may include an "Analysis" button, which can summarize entire threads and replies on X.
If benchmarks are any indication of LLM performance, Grok-1.5 should be nearly as capable as GPT-4. But Grok's true potential lies in its ability to leverage the real-time data on X, and if Grok’s?recent talks?with Midjourney pan out, Grok 1.5 could be a serious competitor in the AI chatbot frenzy.
Data and AI company, Databricks, has released DBRX, an open-source Large Language Model with advanced capabilities in language and code understanding that?outperforms GPT 3.5 and many other open-source models, like Llama-2 70B and Grok-1. Its inference is up to 2x faster than LLaMA2-70B and is about 40% of the size of Grok-1 in both total and active parameter counts. Databricks's creation of a GPT 3.5 level model with just $10M and two months sets a new standard for the industry. But here is one caveat: it’s exceptionally hard to use DBRX unless you’re a Databricks customer. DBRX can be downloaded for free from GitHub or Hugging Face and?can be used for commercial purposes, allowing enterprises to train it with their own data?without constraint.
Anthropic's Claude 3 Opus model has surpassed OpenAI's GPT-4 for the first time on Chatbot Arena leaderboard. Chatbot Arena is a crowdsourced platform used by AI researchers to gauge the relative capabilities of AI language models. GPT-4 models have consistently topped the Chatbot Arena charts since the leaderboard's launch in May 2023. Claude 3's rise showcases growing competition in the LLM space, with many already replacing ChatGPT with Claude 3 in their daily workflows.
Claude 3's ascent is a pretty significant milestone in the rapidly evolving LLM landscape. As competitors like Anthropic and Google continue to gain ground with increasingly capable models — the pressure is on for OpenAI to respond with the next groundbreaking release.
Samsung’s VP (Won-Joon Choi) announced that Samsung is?investing in "generative AI and LLM (large language model) tech"?for its voice assistant, Bixby, across all devices. Samsungs focus on AI technology comes as investors speculate?whether Samsung's rival Apple can deliver its rumored generative AI updates to its voice assistant, Siri.
Openstream.ai is offering businesses AI-powered avatars, virtual assistants and voice agents that can converse with end users in seamless, human-like interactions, bridging the gap between humans and machines.
Artificial intelligence offers a promising solution for businesses aiming to keep customer loyalty strong by revolutionizing how they interact and connect with their clients. Wendy's has introduced an AI-powered loyalty program that delves into individual purchase histories and preferences, enabling the creation of customized offers and rewards. This move comes after its earlier announcement of adding AI-enabled?dynamic pricing to its menus.

The White House introduces a new AI policy mandating a chief AI officer in every federal agency to manage AI technologies and to assess and mitigate AI risks. The policy aims to combat algorithmic discrimination and safeguard individuals' rights, as seen in travel security measures. The DoJ has already appointed?Jonathan Mayer?as its first chief AI officer and plans to?hire 100 AI professionals by summer.?
This move underscores the US government's commitment to integrating AI in public services responsibly and transparently, aiming to set a standard for AI usage that prioritizes safety and ethical considerations. While praised for its ambition, challenges like consistent implementation and enforcement are noted, along with the need for federal oversight and potential state-level initiatives. Balancing security and innovation remains a key concern.
Nvidia has launched 24 AI-powered healthcare tools,?announced deals with Johnson & Johnson for the use of generative AI in surgery, and GE Healthcare,?to improve medical imaging. This move comes after they previously?invested $50M in Recursion Pharmaceuticals (a TechBio company)?and also partnered with Schr?dinger Therapeutics for drug discovery. Colette Kress, Nvidia’s CFO, claimed that they have?built deep domain expertise in healthcare over the past decade, creating the NVIDIA Clara healthcare platform and NVIDIA BioNeMo, a generative AI service to develop, customize and deploy AI foundation models for computer-aided drug discovery.
In a radical change to its business model, Google is considering charging users for content generated by SGE (Search Generative Experience), a search experience that uses AI to provide users with overviews of search topics. Google’s?AI-powered search features could become part of its existing subscription services, with its traditional search engine still remaining free to use.
Although Google already charges users for Gemini and extra storage, this move?marks the first time it’s put one of its core search products behind a paywall. Google is contemplating this commercial shake-up as it tries to integrate AI into its search experience to keep up with competition while safeguarding its primary revenue source, its search-related ads, which makes $175B per year.
Covariant has announced a robotics foundation model that gives robots a human-like ability to reason. The 8 billion parameter RFM-1 can expand its abilities through more data consumption. It incorporates images, video, joint angles, force reading, suction cup strength, and more into its prediction engine to produce images, videos, or a series of commands for a robot. It can be used as a simulation tool, generating action sequences that are both realistic and accurate. With enough data, it could be a useful world simulation tool more capable than one built from the ground up. Covariant aims to make the model be able to do any task in any body.
Tokyo-based startup Sakana AI released?three new Japanese-language AI models, created by “breeding“ existing open-source models to produce optimized “offspring”. Sakana used a "model merging" technique combined with an evolutionary algorithm to create the new models. The process involved breeding hundreds of model generations, with the most successful models becoming "parents" for the next.?
Sakana’s strong performance could suggest a new alternative training path for AI models. If scalable, it could also significantly democratize AI development — enabling high-quality, task-specific models to evolve quickly by mixing and matching the expanding universe of open-source AI.
