Still not convinced?

Well ... at least today, you will learn about the word "Ngopi" and the reminder of how a simple act of drinking coffee could remind you of Agile values and principles.

Ngopi (pronounced Ng-ow-p-ee) means "to have coffee" in Indonesia.

It also carries deeper cultural meaning, far more than just drinking a cup of coffee.

It represents a pause in the day, chilling, a moment to connect with others, share ideas, and reflect on what matters most. It's a cultural ritual that fosters collaboration, builds relationships, and sparks creativity.

The term is commonly recognized amongst the Malay communities in Indonesia, Malaysia, and some Southeast Asian countries.

If you are thinking, "Oh no, the newsletter will have a lot of words I don't understand".
Don't worry, we GOT you.
We'll keep the content to 97% English so you can relate to and gain benefit from the content.

Here's your first sip to relate how your coffee break (i.e., ngopi ) can uplift your Agile mindsets and principles.

At its core, Ngopi embodies values that align beautifully with the principles of Agile:

Collaboration and Connection

  • Agile thrives on collaboration. Agile teams work best when they communicate openly, share ideas, and build trust—just like the conversations that happen during a coffee break. Ngopi reminds us that great ideas often emerge in informal, relaxed settings where people feel comfortable sharing their thoughts.

Reflection and Continuous Improvement

  • Ngopi is a moment to pause, reflect, and recharge. Similarly, Agile emphasizes the importance of reflection through retrospectives and continuous improvement.
  • Taking time to evaluate what's working, what's not, and how to improve is central to both Agile and the spirit of Ngopi.

Energy and Focus

  • Coffee is a universal symbol of energy and focus. Agile teams need energy to stay motivated and focused on delivering value. Ngopi is a metaphor for the "boost" Agile practitioners need to stay inspired and productive.

Adaptability and Creativity

  • Conversations over coffee are often fluid and dynamic, much like Agile itself. Ngopi encourages open-ended discussions, brainstorming, and adaptability—qualities that are essential for Agile teams to navigate change and uncertainty.

Human-Centric Approach

  • Ngopi is inherently human—it's about people coming together, sharing experiences, and building relationships. Agile, too, is deeply human-centric, prioritizing individuals and interactions over processes and tools. Both Ngopi and Agile remind us that success is built on strong, meaningful connections.
