AJI has been established by Pluto Journals and the African Books Collective working with a growing community of no-fee, diamond open access, social science and humanities journals based in African universities, supported by ScienceOpen and JSTOR.

It is a three-year pilot programme to:

  • Enhance the profile and discoverability of African journals
  • Increase journal usage and submissions
  • Mobilise financial support from academic libraries and consortia

The initiative will work with six established African social science and humanities journals annually.

In the first year, 2025, confirmed journals are:

  • Ibadan Sociology Journal (Nigeria)
  • Journal of Humanities (Malawi)
  • Zamani: A Journal of African Historical Studies (Tanzania)
  • Ethiopian Journal of Education
  • Legon Journal of the Humanities (Ghana)
  • Dhaxalreeb (Somaliland)

An Advisory Board has been convened to support the initiative. We are looking forward to working with this esteemed group of African Academics with considerable experience of continent wide programmes.
