Welcome to the 9th Newsletter of the 2024/25 Academic Year!
Being the ninth newsletter must mean we are getting to the crunch point in the semester, and formal teaching is nearly there with just two weeks of teaching to go.
If you’re busy finishing off coursework at the moment, and I know this is a busy time for all of you. You're doing great—stay focused, and remember support is just a message away.
·?????? Extenuating circumstances – if you can’t complete or submit a piece of work we have ways to help you and ensure you are not penalised. Check out the guidance, and if you have any questions do speak to your personal tutor.
·?????? Student study support – the university has lots of support available, do make use of it. From the writing café in the library down to Paul Harrington (Academic Skills Tutor) in the business school we want to help. See more here.
This week we also met with your student reps for a formal meeting. This is so important to me to know what you as students are enjoying and like, and what we can improve on. Thank you to the reps that came along and shared feedback, and for the rest of you please do engage with your reps.
?? News Highlights
Don’t forget: You can access the Financial Times for FREE through the University of Plymouth! It’s a great resource for research. More details are available on our programme page on the DLE.
Here are some key stories this week:
Advantage Club –
This time we’ll be looking at AI, and specifically how AI can help you as a student. I’ll be exploring various ways I think you can use AI to benefit you, but also have a discussion around what you clearly can’t use it for.
Whilst I will present this, I don’t have all the answers, so come along geared up to both learn and share your experiences and what has worked for you!

?? Video Tips
I’ve had a quiet week this week but did manage one video about one way AI can help you study better. Click on TikTok or Instagram to see more.
University can be a struggle; I know this and sometimes it feels like you just can’t do it and you’ll never learn it all. Those times when you’re beating yourself up, remember the word YET. None of us were perfect and what we do from day 1, that’s part of learning.
So, when your brain is telling yourself “I can’t do it”, add the word “YET”. This small change to “I can’t do it yet” has a nod to the future, and acknowledges that with time, yes you will be able to do it.
See more on TikTok.

?? Job Opportunities
There are lots of great opportunities on the Careers website, as well as some fantastic resources to help you prepare for interviews and assessment centres.
I also shared with 2nd and final years a list of internships that may really be of interest to you. These are all duplicated on the careers website – but do check them out. A short summer internship may just make the difference in getting that graduate role and really improve your degree on your return.
Employer visit – just a reminder that Bishop Fleming Chartered Accountants have invited us to a great opportunity on the 11th Dec in the afternoon, just a short walk from PBS – Click here to sign up now
