Happy 2023! It’s a new year, another day, another month. We made it, and that alone is a great feat. Congratulations!
A friend recommended that I read a speech titled "The Man in the Arena," which, among some, would come to be known as "Citizenship in a Republic,"?and I am glad I did. So I decided to share an extract of the speech delivered at the Sorbonne, in Paris, France, on April 23, 1910, by Theodore Roosevelt, the former president of the United States, because I think it’s a good charge for the year.
"It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat."
I found the passage to be striking, so I’ll like to say that in 2023, if there is one thing we need to do, it’s at least try and make a move. Let it be just as Theodore Roosevelt said so: "At the best, we’ll know in the end whether it's the triumph of high achievement or, at the worst, if we fail, it will be at least while daring greatly."
