The Weirdness that is Schedule III Cannabis

Dateline: 5-7-24

This morning in Middle Tennessee, its rather moist because of above average temperatures and lots of rain so the fauna and flora are in full tilt grow and reproduce mode. It’s an odd mixture of mushrooms, pollen and increasingly Cicadas. Speaking of Cicadas, I’m not sure that this weird looking insect going to be the crisis that everyone thinks it will be but it sounds ominous, “Billions of insects will emerge, what will you do and where will you go!” Well until I’m inundated with Cicadas, The Old Hemp Farmer will enjoy his customary organic Indonesian coffee and Costa Rican Cacao laced with some stout Tennessee homegrown Cannabis Extract. Lately yours truly has been somewhat lax scribing my Cannabis articles but right now it’s tough not to sound redundant and quite frankly to get excited about Cannabis. The Old Hemp Hemp Farmer has a 50 year relationship with Cannabis and one of things that got me through risking mandatory Federal prison to grow and learn about this plant was that eventually Cannabis would be legal. For me and others, we never grew Cannabis to be “outlaws” or “stick it to the man” we just wanted the opportunity to grow and study this wonderful plant without looking over our shoulders. Which was impetus for millions of people that worked tirelessly for Cannabis decriminalization and legalization over the decades that eventually that logic and the facts would prevail and sway the masses to have an epiphany and do the right thing and “free the plant”. And over the last forty years, there has been substantial progress in the fight for legal Cannabis but this battle has been agonizingly slow and the results have been totally weird.

With the majority of the people in the United States living in states that have Recreational or Medical Cannabis that provides employment for nearly a million folks, the Federal government realized that there was a 900 pound gorilla in the room and it was smoking a rather large “joint”. But you can’t pretend that you don’t notice the rather large “stoned” primate sitting on the couch next to you, forever. So for the last couple years, the Federal government has been throwing the Cannabis quandary back and forth between the DEA, FDA and the USDA, with each bureaucracy trying to preserve their power while being totally noncommittal. The one thing that politicians and bureaucrats realize real quick is that you can’t be criticized for not making a decision, and Cannabis is the poster child for that concept. The mantra for the Federal government over the last decade, has been that before they made any permanent rulings was that Cannabis needed more research and input from Law Enforcement. Using everything from impaired drivers to endangering the youth of America to slow the roll of any reality based Federal laws. But the juggernaut that is the Cannabis Industry can be ignored for only so long and finally after much gnashing of teeth and scores of committees, The DEA decided to reclassify cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III, which is undoubtedly one of the worst moments in the history of drug policy in the United States.

Seriously, after 12 years of Recreational Cannabis, we’re going to pretend that Schedule III Cannabis is the solution that the Cannabis Industry needs? And if anyone thinks that Schedule III Cannabis does anything to help already established Cannabis companies they need to change their medication, because you are on the wrong drugs. Seriously you folks at the DEA and the FDA need to get off of the pharmaceutical tranquilizers and martinis and step into the 21st century. Schedule III Cannabis will present more way more problems than solutions in commercial Cannabis. Seriously most the folks that make a living growing and selling Cannabis really don’t give a rat’s ass what the DEA thinks, because it has never been reality based. The DEA has always had their narrative about Cannabis regardless of the facts and this is a prime example, Schedule III Cannabis is still pretending that 24 states don’t have legal Recreational Cannabis. Anyway as always, Hemp Dawgs and Hemp Puppies keep one eye on the weather and the other eye on the market.

Great read. To better show the point, who has the artwork (AI or not) of that 900# gorilla smoking a joint? Who is he passing it to next?
