Weird Vision Symptoms May be Early Alzheimer’s Signs

Around 5.8 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's, which is the most common form of dementia. Alzheimer's is believed to be caused by an abnormal buildup of proteins around the brain's cells. A recent study conducted at the University of California, San Francisco, revealed that about 94% of individuals with Alzheimer's pathology also experience posterior cortical atrophy, known as Benson's syndrome.

While there is currently no known cure for Alzheimer's, there are treatments available if the condition is detected early. Posterior cortical atrophy is a rare progressive neurodegenerative disorder where brain cells in the posterior cerebral cortex are lost, leading to shrinkage (atrophy). Consequently, individuals with this condition may experience difficulties:

  • Reading text- you keep losing your place on the page because lines of text seem to move around on the page. Words and letters may look jumbled together.
  • Judging distances-like the space between steps on a flight of stairs.
  • Following directions-because you can’t tell your right from your left.
  • Recognizing faces, objects, or places.
  • Avoiding bumping into obstacles-you don’t appropriately judge where they are even though they might be right in front of you.
  • Dealing with numbers-For example, you know your best friend’s phone number, but you can’t call them because you can’t find the numbers on your phone.
  • Using tools and appliances-because the on-and-off switches aren’t located where you “see” them.
