Weight-loss surgery lowers cancer risk

Fat cells are known to promote cancer risk factors like systemic inflammation and elevated hormonal levels. Given the growing obesity phenomenon across the globe, it is soon expected to beat?smoking?as the top cancer risk factor. The findings of three independent novel studies have suggested that weight-loss surgery could reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancers as also the mortality linked with them.

A study conducted in Dallas found that obese people undergoing bariatric surgery were at least two times less likely to develop certain types of cancer and more than three times less likely to die of cancer compared to obese people without the surgery. Another larger study found a 32% lower risk of developing cancer and a 48% lower risk of cancer-related death. A third study combined the data of 13 prior studies that tracked over 3.2 million patients for a decade to find that bariatric surgery reduced the risk of colon cancer by 37%.
