The weight of expectation: men's mental health

The weight of expectation: men's mental health

Over 85% of rough sleepers in the UK are men. 3/4 of people who die by suicide each year in the UK are men. Yet many statistics like these only seem to be getting worse. For example, the number of men experiencing suicidal thoughts doubling since 2009.

We offer a powerful session exploring men’s mental health, societal pressures, and the shifts needed to foster true resilience and support. This talk will unpack the cultural, biological, and psychological dynamics that shape men’s experiences with mental health challenges. Through revealing statistics and real-world examples, we’ll challenge stereotypes and discuss how men can build healthier emotional habits, seek support, and redefine masculinity to fit today’s world.

This session is for anyone interested in understanding the unique challenges men face, the science behind these differences, and practical steps to support men’s mental wellbeing. We’ll discuss why mental health is a spectrum that affects all of us, why traditional masculinity may prevent men from reaching out, and how men and those around them can create safer, supportive environments.

Outline:

  • Context Setting: Why men’s mental health needs a nuanced approach
  • The Mental Health Spectrum: Understanding mental health as a continuum that impacts everyone
  • Key Statistics: Eye-opening stats on men’s mental health and suicide rates
  • Neuroscience Insights: How brain chemistry and biology play into mental health
  • Cultural Expectations: How society’s views on masculinity impact mental wellness
  • Emotional Outlets and Risks: How bottling emotions can lead to crisis and what to do instead
  • Role Models and Success Stories: High-profile men breaking the stigma around mental health
  • Practical Support: Ways men and their loved ones can promote healthy coping and resilience

Duration: 60mins

Thanks for sharing. Wasn't aware about the numbers, but since low t in men is highly correlated to depression and t declined one percentage point per year throughout the last 50 years, those consequences are absolutely obvious but sad too. I think it's highly important to stop condemning manliness in general and in the way it's happening nowadays. Strong and mentally healthy men are stabilising our society. Constant blaming causes more problems than it solves!?
