Weigh Your Words, Don't Count - The Storyteller's Spotlight #18

Weigh Your Words, Don't Count - The Storyteller's Spotlight #18

This edition is for leaders aiming to communicate more effectively.

Words should be weighed, not counted. - Yiddish proverb

Amid the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln delivered one of the most concise yet profound speeches in history—the Gettysburg Address. It lasted 2 minutes. With only 272 words, Lincoln was able to honor the fallen soldiers, redefine the purpose of the war, and envision a future of unity and freedom for the nation. This brief address contrasts sharply with the speech that preceded it (Edward Everett), which lasted over two hours and has since faded into obscurity.

Weighing is a common way to assess the value of something. Chances are that you've weighed one or multiple items in this list:

  • Food ingredients
  • Gold and other precious metals
  • Mail and packages
  • Luggage
  • Medications
  • Chemicals
  • Investments
  • Materials for construction

But have you weighed your actions and words lately? We must not forget that our words and actions impact others in various ways.

Lesson - Choose Your Words Wisely

The impact of what you say is not determined by reaching a certain number of words when you talk. You must intentionally choose the right words based on the meaning they convey and what would best resonate with the audience. Only 7% of your message's impact comes from the words you say, so you better choose your words wisely. The remaining 90% of your impact comes from how you say those words and the strategic use of facial expressions.

Your words are just the tip of the communication iceberg.

Why you should weigh your words in storytelling:

  1. Focus on Your Message: Simplicity matters in communication. Aim not to overload listeners with information but to engage them with concise, meaningful soundbites.
  2. Emotional Resonance: Weighing your words allows you to prioritize emotional depth and connection, making your storytelling more relatable and fostering trust, empathy, and rapport.
  3. Clarity: Eliminate jargon and focus on the essence of your message to facilitate better understanding and comprehension.
  4. Persuasion: Blending the right words with effective delivery can become a powerful recipe for persuading your audience.
  5. Reflective Listening: Effective storytelling encourages dialogue with the audience. Leaders who choose their words wisely and actively listen will invite stronger, more meaningful interactions with listeners.
