#WegovyWorthIt: The Surprising Benefits of Taking Wegovy Despite High Cost, if Insurance Doesn't Cover

As an OBGYN, I've had many patients come to me concerned about the high cost of Wegovy, a popular weight loss medication. In Los Angeles, it can cost anywhere from $1,300 to $1,800 a month, which can seem daunting at first. For many patients, if their health insurance covers the medication, then the costs drop dramatically down to $25 per month or nothing.

But for those patients who do not have insurance or whose insurance does not cover the medication, there can be a significant feeling of sticker shock. However, after doing some calculations and speaking with my patients, I've discovered that taking Wegovy may actually save you money in the long run. Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of Wegovy, is offering a $500 discount on the medication, which brings the cost down to around $800 a month.

While $800 may still seem like a lot, consider your typical weekly spending on food and entertainment. A $50 dinner and lunch combo twice a week during the weekdays and a $100 weekend entertainment budget adds up to $800 a month. And here's the surprising part: once you start taking Wegovy, you won't feel like eating or going out as much, which can actually save you money.

In addition, many patients with medical conditions such as PCOS, diabetes, and high blood pressure have reported a decrease in their need for medication, which can save even more money. So, while the $800 may seem like a lot at first, the cost may end up being a wash when you factor in the savings from eating out and medication.

So, if you're considering taking Wegovy but are worried about the cost, you may want to also consider the bigger picture and weigh the potential benefits.?
