PWHL ‘Takeover Tour’ sets attendance record in Denver.
Sunday’s PWHL game between the Minnesota Frost and Montreal Victoire took place in an unusual location—in Denver, nearly 1,000 miles from either team’s home city. That didn’t deter 14,018 fans from flocking to Ball Arena, where they set a U.S. record for attendance at a professional women’s hockey game.?
The PWHL, which is in its second season, averaged 5,844 fans per game in 2024 but is already getting around 7,000 this season, thanks in part to strong attendance at neutral sites.
That’s part of the league’s growth strategy. Before the season, the PWHL began promoting a nine-city “Takeover Tour” designed to simultaneously whet the North American public’s appetite for pro women’s hockey and test out potential destinations for expansion franchises. (The tour is part of the regular season, which began Nov. 30.) The first game of the tour took place Jan. 5 in Seattle and drew 12,608 spectators to watch the Boston Fleet eke out a victory over the Victoire. Three nights later, 19,083 fans showed up in Vancouver to watch the Victoire beat the Toronto Sceptres—the third-highest attendance mark of any PWHL game to date.

Nashville group submits bid for WNBA expansion team ‘Tennessee Summitt’
A number of University of Tennessee legends are eyeing a new venture for their state — a WNBA expansion team.
On Thursday, Bill Haslam — chairman of the NHL’s Nashville Predators and former governor of Tennessee — and his wife, Crissy, said they were leading a group of investors in the submission of a WNBA expansion team bid. Candace Parker, a three-time WNBA champion and two-time NCAA champion at Tennessee, and former Tennessee star quarterback Peyton Manning also will be partners in the bid, per the group.
The group said it planned to submit a bid Thursday afternoon in hopes of bringing a franchise to Nashville for the 2028 season.
“We believe a WNBA team, based in Nashville, could serve as a beacon for girls and women, young and old, across Tennessee, while also creating more opportunities for sports fans as our community continues to grow,” Bill Haslam said in a statement. “In building this new franchise, we will take inspiration from the Nashville Predators and its ‘community-first’ approach to running the business. This WNBA team will establish itself as a mainstay in Nashville and communities throughout the state of Tennessee.”
RBC Wealth Management named presenting sponsor of TST’s Women’s Event, official wealth management sponsor of entire tournament.
The Soccer Tournament (TST), the star-studded, 7v7 world championship offering $1 million winner-take-all prizes for men and women, today named RBC Wealth Management as the official tournament sponsor for TST 2025. RBC Wealth Management will serve as the presenting sponsor of TST’s women’s event, continuing their support for soccer and women athletes.
TST women’s event debuted last summer, offering an identical $1 million grand prize to the 48-team men’s event. The matching prizes between the men’s and women’s events displayed TST’s commitment to equality while also offering one of the largest purses in women’s professional soccer.
RBC Wealth Management’s investment in TST’s women’s event will enable the tournament to double in size from eight teams in 2024 to 16 teams in 2025. The inclusion of eight new teams will give nearly 200 additional women’s soccer players the chance to compete on a nationally televised stage for TST’s winner-take-all prize.
The sponsorship with TST also furthers RBC Wealth Management’s involvement in professional soccer. In 2023, RBC Wealth Management and Major League Soccer agreed to a multi-year sponsorship in the United States.
