THIS WEEK’S WINE REVIEW:
In keeping with this week’s Vinitaly blog, the review is about a delicious, Aussie wine made from an Italian, red grape variety.
LAGREIN, is one of my favourite native Italian, red grape varieties. It has oodles of colour and flavour but does not have that searing acidity, which is an integral part of many, if not most native Italian reds.
I first came across Lagrein when my old mate, David Barnett, gave me a taste of his HARTZBARN 2006 BAROSSA LAGREIN, and I instantly fell in love with it. By the way, this wine is drinking sensationally well at the moment.
HAND CRAFTED by GEOFF HARDY 2014 LIMESTONE COAST LAGREIN: This wine has a lovely, vibrant purple colour. On the bouquet, it has appealing aromas of red berries, hints of chocolate and a slight earthiness.
On the palate, it has masses of plums with some blackberries and a smooth, elegant, long finish with fine grain tannins. A real class act that is great drinking now, but will be even yummier, in 2-3 years time.
