This week's top USAID consulting gigs and more social impact roles

Hello, aspiring do-gooders,

If you cruise Devex’s job board for consulting gigs, you’ll find no shortage of opportunities tied to the world’s largest aid agency, USAID. But you’ll also notice that these job postings come with caveats, including roles at the proposal stage that are contingent on funding. All in all, it’s not a straightforward recruitment process for USAID-funded consulting jobs.

So, this week, I’m sharing expert tips on how to navigate this recruitment process, along with featured current job opportunities on USAID-funded projects.

Keep reading to see these and many more leads from global development’s largest job board for every skill level. Also, if you scroll all the way to the end of this post, you’ll be rewarded with some tips on virtual event networking from one of our favorite career coaches.

As always, I hope you find this week’s Devex Jobs Alert useful, and if you’d like to share feedback or have any questions, feel free to reach out to me here on LinkedIn.

Happy hunting!

Applying for USAID consulting roles is far from a straightforward process, and may be especially confusing for those who are new to global development.

You may come across a job posting stating that the role is “contingent upon award,” or something similar, which means that the job is at the proposal stage, so “an organization is recruiting for potential consultants for when the project is awarded.

This means they do not have a project yet, and really, they're just going to feature your name on a list of potential consultants,” Susanne Barsoum, the founder and CEO of KeyLime International, told Devex.

But there are other job opportunities to consider at this stage, as well as much more to consider about the different stages of a USAID-funded project’s life cycle. Devex Career Account members can read more expert insights from Barsoum.

Wise words for job seekers

This virtual aspect of industry gatherings remains integral well over three years since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. I asked Nexford University's director of career innovation Jennifer Bangoura for insights on how one can make the most out of the connections made during virtual and hybrid events. Here are a few tips I came away with.

? Establish common ground. Name-checking the event is enough to give your follow-up LinkedIn connection requests some weight, but you can strengthen it further by identifying other things you may have in common.

? Front-load your prep work. By researching the people who are most relevant to your professional goals, you’ll know which sessions to pay attention to and won’t waste time scrambling for this background info during the event.

? Follow up. “I think people will be surprised how over time … if you are liking and commenting on people's [social media] posts, those folks are going to recognize that,” Bangoura said.
