This week’s top stories: Trump shares false images, YouTube expands Shopping program, and Threads and Snapchat add new features

Welcome to the Battenhall Weekly, Edition #29

1. Trump posts fake AI endorsement from Taylor Swift

Ahead of the Democratic National Convention, Trump posted AI-generated images on Truth Social that falsely suggested Taylor Swift and her fans support him. The images, showing Swift in pro-Trump gear, were quickly debunked by Swift’s fans, who are known for supporting Kamala Harris, and made it clear that Swift hasn't endorsed any candidate.

2. YouTube’s enhanced Shopify partnership puts pressure on TikTok

YouTube recently expanded its partnership with Shopify to enhance its Shopping Affiliate Program, giving brands and creators broader opportunities for revenue generation by helping their followers discover and purchase products. The deal shows YouTube’s social commerce intent, which is unsurprising given that 30 billion hours of shopping-related videos were watched on the platform in 2023.

3. TikTok's EU user base grows 5.6% YoY

TikTok is still gaining users in the EU, with 150 million active each month, up from 142 million earlier this year. Despite slower growth compared to the past and the potential for losing U.S. users if a recent bill is enacted, TikTok is focusing on expanding in Europe. The app is introducing new features and incentives, such as TikTok Shop, to maintain growth in the region.

4. Threads rolls out scheduling and analytics features

Threads is rolling out new features, including the ability to save up to 100 draft posts and customize homepage layout. For brands and creators, there’s a new analytics tool called Insights for tracking metrics like follower demographics and interactions, plus a scheduling option for posts coming soon. These updates are aimed at boosting Threads’ appeal as it aims to challenge X.

5. Snapchat unveils new ad features

Snapchat has unveiled several new ad platform features, including enhanced lead generation tools, improved bidding options for apps and eCommerce, and high-impact AR ads. New AI tools and targeting options are also being introduced to help advertisers boost engagement and performance.

6. X faces uncertain future in Brazil and Venezuela

X is facing possible bans in Venezuela and Brazil due to clashes with local leaders. Venezuela’s President Maduro ordered a 10-day block after a public feud with Elon Musk, while authorities in Brazil are threatening action over Musk's refusal to shut down accounts accused of spreading misinformation. Despite the risk of financial and user losses, Musk insists on defending free speech, which could either uphold his principles or harm X’s future.
