Welcome to another new edition of The Future of Protein Production newsletter! And yet again it's been an intriguing week for news, with big breakthroughs, key acquisitions, new distribution partnerships, and significant predictions for key areas of the alternative proteins sector.

The excitement surrounding cultivated meat in the USA has rippled across the Atlantic after a major announcement by the Dutch government, which cements the Netherlands' position in European food-tech and beyond.

Meanwhile, another plant-based brand has been given a lifeline by a famous former model, an Austrian biotech is scaling up its CO2- to-protein gas fermentation production, and a major player has acquired a Canadian pulse crop specialist with pulse dehulling and splitting facility to transform lentils, chickpeas and peas into shelf- and food-ready products for domestic and international consumption.

Arkeon sets up pilot production facility and plans demo facility for scaleup

Biotech startup, Arkeon, has successfully raised over €10 million in capital to date to build out its proprietary technology for the direct conversion of carbon dioxide into protein ingredients. “The successful implementation of our pilot production plant represents a solid basis and illustrates that our company has set up the technical foundation to unlock our production technology at large scale. It is an essential step on our way to scale to large commercial production outputs”, said Dr Günther Bochmann , Technological Project Lead of Arkeon

Heather Mills takes on Plant and Bean food site following deal with administrators

The administrators of Plant and Bean Limited (P&B) – which went into administration on 31 May – have announced that the company’s manufacturing site and associated equipment has been sold to Vegan Solo Consulting and Duo Renovations. Vegan Solo specializes in the production of meat-free products and is run by Heather Mills, the former model. Duo Renovations is a real-estate business, on which Mills is a director. “I am delighted to acquire the P&B facilities and to keep it as a non-meat factory," she said. "I am also pleased to try and help the founder of P&B who has worked in a similar vein to myself for many decades to drive positive change for the environment, the animals and for the health of the global population”

ADM eager to partner with farmers following acquisition of Prairie Pulse

ADM, a leading company in agricultural origination and processing and supply chain management, has announced the acquisition of Prairie Pulse Inc, owners of a pulse crop cleaning, milling and packaging facility in Vanscoy, Saskatchewan, Canada. "This addition also expands our capabilities to meet the needs of our downstream customers, who are increasingly looking at pulses as protein sources for both human and animal nutrition products," said ADM Commercial Manager, Aaron Brown

Redefine Meat accelerates UK distribution to ‘meat’ demand with eight wholesaler partners

Redefine Meat is ramping up its UK distribution to meet demand with eight wholesaler partners. “Following our expansion in the UK we’re now working with some of the most iconic brands across all dining occasions to help expand their plant-based menus to meet the growing appetite for meat alternatives," said Simon Owen , Head of UK, Redefine Meat . "This requires a range of efficient and effective wholesaler partners able to fulfil our growing demand and who share our vision for offering a wider range of delicious and sustainable plant-based options that satisfy all five senses”

Cultivated meat technology to disrupt US$5.6 billion Malaysia meat and seafood markets, according to GlobalData

Cellular meat technology will disrupt the estimated US$5.6 billion Malaysian meat and fish and seafood markets, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company. “While the plant-based meat substitutes market is booming in Asia, the cultivated meat market is just gearing up to take flight with Singapore being the only Asian country to approve commercial sales of lab-grown meat," said Tim Hill , Key Account Director at GlobalData Plc Singapore. "South Korea, China, Japan, and Australia are also framing laws for cellular food products”

Another cultivated meat milestone as Dutch government agrees pre-approval tastings of cultivated meat and seafood in The Netherlands

The Dutch government, in collaboration with cultivated meat producers Meatable and Mosa Meat and sector representative hollandbio , have successfully created a ‘code of practice’ that would make tastings of cultivated meat and seafood possible in controlled environments. “This is great news for the Netherlands," enthused Krijn De Nood , CEO at Meatable. "We know cultivated meat can significantly help reduce climate impact. By enabling the tasting of cultivated meat, The Netherlands maintains its pioneering role in Europe and beyond." “This is a great achievement for the Dutch government and another proof point that the Netherlands is a global leader in agriculture and food innovation," added Maarten Bosch , CEO of Mosa Meat. "We thank all 127 members of the Tweede Kamer who voted in favor of finding a way to make this possible and Minister Kuipers, Minister Adema and their teams for being professional and collaborative in getting it done"

Osem-Nestlè Group subsidiary Tivol collaborates with food-tech startup More Foods

Tivol, the subsidiary of Osem-Nestlè Group serving the Israeli market, is now working with food-tech startup More Foods to develop plant-based meat alternatives made from pumpkin seed for use in food products.?“The collaboration aims to meet the growing demand for healthy and sustainable food options, leveraging More Foods’ expertise in plant-based technology and the Osem-Nestlè Group’s vast market research,” a press release stated. It points out that in Israel, 13% of the population identifies as vegetarian or vegan, with 45% of the population stating that they want to reduce their meat consumption

NextFerm Technologies announces a commercial manufacturing agreement for the production of ProteVin

NextFerm Technologies, a food-tech company developing ProteVin, a vegan, fermentation-based, non-GMO protein alternative and other innovative yeast-based nutrients, has announced that it has entered into a commercial manufacturing agreement with a subcontractor in India, Kothari Fermentation and Biochem, for the production of ProteVin. The agreement relates only for production services and doesn’t include IP transfer to the subcontractor. "The production setup that will be established in India will allow us to meet the growing demand for ProteVin, with a lower investment than planned with the ability to increase future capacity," said Boaz Noy , Chief Executive Officer of NextFerm (TASE: NXFR) . "ProteVin is the only alternative protein on the market today with a neutral taste and an animal-like nutritional value, and we believe it will become a leading solution in the global alternative protein industry"
