First up, there was news from a CDMO in Singapore that not one – but four – companies have been unveiled as strategic partners to help build the future of food in the island country through microbial precision fermentation.
Another story out of Israel saw a food-tech specialist reveal a milestone for cultivated meat, with claims that the costs of its in-house growth media for bovine cell cultivation in suspension have been reduced by 75% from prices just two years ago.
Meanwhile, NEOM, the exciting new urban area planned by Saudi Arabia to be built in its northwestern Tabuk Province, has announced an MoU with a leader in cultivated seafood, including the establishment of an incubation and food innovation ecosystem in the Kingdom.
And finally, showcasing the potential of Canada’s full plant-based value chain, companies from across the sector have partnered to develop new AI technology that is expected to improve the quality of Canada’s protein crops and ingredients.

Steakholder Foods achieves +75% cost reduction in growth media for bovine cell cultivation
Steakholder Foods has informed us today that the company’s biology team has successfully reduced the cost of its in-house growth media for bovine cell cultivation in suspension by just over 75% from prices just two years ago. “Our ability to achieve a significant cost reduction in growth media is a testament to the dedication and innovation of our biology team," stated Dan Kozlovski , CTO at Steakholder Foods . Plant protein partners developing AI technology to improve crop and ingredient quality
Showcasing the potential of Canada’s full plant-based value chain, companies from across the sector have partnered to develop new artificial intelligence technology that is expected to improve the quality of Canada’s protein crops and ingredients. “Canada’s food and ingredient sectors are evolving, and with this evolution comes a need for new technology – including technology that utilizes the vast potential of artificial intelligence and machine learning,” said W. L. (Bill) Greuel ,?CEO, Protein Industries Canada . “By focusing their initial efforts on in-field AI technology, our project partners are building on the established success of Canada’s agriculture industry to help add value and increase the sustainability of our plant-based value chain. This approach will bring benefit to Canada’s farmers, as well as beyond to our ingredient processors and Canadian families”

Italy still full-speed ahead on banning 'synthetic' food products
Despite an apparent recent backtrack on its cultivated meat stance, Italy will ban synthetic food products, becoming the first country in the world to have made such a step, as announced by Italy’s Minister of Agriculture Francesco Lollobrigida at an event in Ireland at the weekend organized by European Conservatives and Reformists faction (ECR). More worrying were comments from European Union Agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski. “Synthetic meat is not meat, synthetic milk is not milk. I defend natural products, and using the name of a natural product for synthetic products, I believe, is a step in the wrong direction”

Meat and dairy giants failing to reduce emissions, with increase of +3% ahead of COP28
As global leaders prepare to gather for COP28 in Dubai, new analysis of emissions data from 20 of the largest listed meat and dairy firms shows that disclosed emissions are still rising year-on-year. Livestock is estimated to be responsible for around 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. “The failure of leading meat and dairy companies to reduce emissions underlines the urgent need for more policy focus on the food and agriculture sector," stated Jeremy Coller , Chair & Founder of the FAIRR Initiative network. "Food system emissions deserve a place at the top of the table, alongside energy and transport, as they represent an estimated third of greenhouse gas emissions and 40% of methane. Investors hope the first-ever publication of a food and agriculture roadmap at COP28 this month will catalyze the transition to 1.5°C and a more sustainable food system"

Planting Hope's Hope and Sesame Sesamemilk has lowest water usage across dairy and plant milks
The Planting Hope Company Inc, a food-tech company dedicated to creating sustainable food and beverage solutions through advanced ingredient, formulation, and packaging technology, has announced the results of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study conducted by Planet FWD for Hope and Sesame Sesamemilk in comparison to milk and milk alternatives. "When we embarked on developing the world's first commercialized sesame milk, our goal was to create a dairy alternative that delivered comparable nutrition to dairy milk but with a greatly improved environmental footprint over existing plant milk alternatives," said Julia Stamberger , Co-founder & CEO, The Planting Hope Company Inc.

Amber Wave emerges as North America’s largest wheat protein facility
Amber Wave has launched production at what will be North America’s largest wheat protein facility, following an investment by Summit Agricultural Group. Amber Wave is now producing AmberPro Vital Wheat Gluten, a domestic source of gluten for commercial bakeries, food ingredient plants, alternative meat manufacturers, pet food processors, and specialty feed companies. “It’s an exciting time for our organization, presenting a tremendous opportunity for our customers and growers," said Randy Cimorelli , CEO of Amber Wave . "With more than 80% of the Vital Wheat Gluten used in the USA being imported, we not only add value to the growing region but also serve as a supply chain solution provider for our customer base”
