In focus: Climate and environment
As part of an ongoing effort to highlight salary trends across the development sector, we’ve just dissected climate and environment roles, including which employers are the most transparent and what they're paying.?
Unsurprisingly, government agencies and multilateral organizations such as the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, and USAID, are the most transparent climate employers, representing 38% of the total climate jobs with salaries in our job board in 2023. This is true for most positions regardless of the sector, as those organizations have standard and public pay scales for each of their positions.
The climate salaries across career levels average $112,739 in North America, representing the third-highest salary average after Central Asia, which averages $126,553, and Eastern Europe, with $113,101.?

Wise words for job seeker
We recently held a digital event featuring insights from Kathryn Harper, an expert in professional development writing. She offered a wide range of advice for ensuring your CV best reflects your expertise and experience through the lens of global development hiring authorities. Here are three key takeaways from our discussion.
Don’t rely on AI. There’s a lot of buzz about artificial intelligence in the workplace and in recruitment, but in terms of whether it can take on the role of CV writer, Harper urged caution. AI is still too generic. “I think it is still untested in the arena of distinctive storytelling,” she said.
Boring isn’t bad. Don’t be tempted by “newsletter” CV templates, which incorporate photos and graphics. Think of LinkedIn profiles, which are “just a list of what you did, who you did it for, how long you did it, and what you achieved. And there’s a reason for that because that’s how readers consume information,” she said.
A job description isn’t a CV. There’s been “an over-reliance on using one’s job description as a CV,” Harper said. The job description of a role is “What you were hired to do. Your CV is what you actually are doing, and what outcomes you’re achieving,” she explained.
